General Information - Lubrication System

Usage:

The lubrication system consists of various components that supply grease and lubrication to different points automatically based on set time intervals. The components in the lubrication system are:

  • Machine lubrication system

  • Grease injectors

  • Thread lubrication system

  • Hammer oil system (If Equipped)

Machine Lubrication

(1) Grease Pump
(2) Machine Lube Tank

The Machine Lubrication tank is located on the front walkway on the left side of the drill. Grease is filled through a bulk fitting at the service center. An electrically operated Lubrication Pump is mounted on top of the Lubrication Tank. The pump discharges grease into the delivery line which supplies grease to all lubrication banks around the drill.

A pressure reducing valve is fitted into the supply before pressure continues to the control valve. The grease pump (1) is hydraulically driven and the timing for the system is controlled by the control system.

The lubrication interval can be set to different intervals and is set in minutes. The default value and factory setting is set to 120 minutes. The lube solenoid is activated at 120 minute intervals unless the default setting has been changed, and will run for up to 2 minutes. A grease pressure transducer is installed in the grease pump delivery line and will send an input when the pressure setting is reached.

Grease Injectors

(3) Grease injectors

The grease injectors are grouped into banks in localized areas. This is to reduce the length of hose to various grease points around the machine.

Each injector can be manually adjusted to discharge the precise amount of lubricant each bearing needs. Injectors are mounted singly at each bearing, or grouped in a manifold with feed lines supplying lubricant to the bearings. In each case, injectors are supplied with lubricant under pump pressure through a single supply line.

In the event that grease cannot be supplied from the machine lubrication system, hand lubrication is still possible from a central location near each of the grouped grease points. If any point is not receiving grease, it should be noted and repaired as soon as practical. In the event that a grease point is receiving an excess amount of grease, the injector for that point should be adjusted to reduce the amount of waste. To properly adjust the lubrication injectors, refer to M0079986 , "MD6250" Testing and Adjusting , Lubrication Injectors - Check and Adjust.

Lubrication Interval

The Auto Lube Pressure is displayed on the machine monitor system. A manual soft button allows the system to be manually activated to allow for testing and purging the system. Default pressure is 17250 kPa (2500 psi) and should never be altered.

The auto lube timer sets the off time between cycles, and is displayed as Lubrication Interval on the supervisor level password protected calibration screen. The off time minutes can be changed by touching the + or - buttons on the screen.

Thread Lubrication

(8) Thread Lube Nozzle

The thread lubrication system is air operated and applies grease to the drill steel pipe threads when drill steel is added or removed. The thread lubrication system is controlled by the thread lube button on the right joystick in the cab.

The thread lubrication system consists of:

  • Thread lube pump

  • Thread lube drum

  • Thread lube nozzle

  • Thread lube hose

The thread lube system uses a pneumatically powered thread grease pump which is supplied through the auxiliary air pressure regulator. When energized, the thread lube solenoid opens allowing air to the air service unit. This actuates the pneumatic lube pump and supplies grease to the thread lube nozzle at the base of the mast which sprays grease onto the pipe threads.

Hammer Oil (If Equipped)

Illustration 6g06372025
(9) Hammer Oil System

The hammer oil system (9) supplies lubrication to the DTH (Down the Hole) Hammer. This hammer oil flow can be adjusted from the operators screen.

The hammer oil system has an air solenoid valve mounted on the hammer oil tank along with a hammer oil cycle switch. Then the hammer oil cycle switch counts ten strokes from the constant delivery distributor box, the solenoid is energized and runs the hammer oil pump. If the drill control module fails to count ten strokes in the correct time, a hammer oil interlock will be activated.

Manual Lubrication Points

(4) Cable Tensioner Assembly
(5) Boarding Stairs
(6) Hydraulically Operated Break Out (HOBO) Wrench

Some points on the machine are not greased by the Lubrication System. These points cannot be greased by the lubrication system because the lubrication points are too far for grease to travel, require little grease, or have too many moving parts nearby.

The Cable Tensioner assembly (4) has points on each of the four sheave pins that need to be greased. These points require a recommended two pumps of a grease gun every 50 hours.

There are four pivot pins at the top of the boarding stairs (5). These require two pumps of a grease gun to each grease nipple every 250 hours.

The Hydraulic Operated Break Out (HOBO) Wrench (6) needs a recommended two pumps of a grease gun to each grease nipple every 50 hours.
