Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure. |
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To help prevent possible injury or death, refer to the information in Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting". |
Personal injury or death can result from machine movement. Place blocks in front of and behind the wheels to make sure the machine does not move while the parking brakes are disengaged. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

- Parking Brake System
Required Tools | ||
Tooling (A) | Part Number | Description |
8T-0858 | Pressure Gauge (0 TO 16,000-KPA (0 TO 2,300-PSI)) |
- Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.
- Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Stop the engine.
- Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

Illustration 3 g06235428 - Slowly remove hydraulic tank filler cap (2) to relieve any pressure in the hydraulic tank.
Reference: For additional information about the release of hydraulic oil pressure, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.
- This test will show if the parking brake solenoid valves are operating correctly.

0 to 16,000 kPa (0 to 2,300 psi) to pressure tap (1) on the parking brake control valve. - Start the engine.
- Disengage the parking brake by moving the parking brake control to the OFF position.
- If the pressure reading on the gauge remains at
11000 ± 690 kPa (1600 ± 100 psi) the parking brake is disengaged, check the operation of the parking brake solenoid valves and the electrical circuit for the parking brake. - If the pressure reading on the gauge is not within the specification, check the retarder control valve or service brake valve.
- When this test is complete, release the service brakes, engage the parking brake, and stop the engine. Remove the test equipment. Place the protective cover on the test port.
