The air system is composed of the following systems:
- Air compressor
- Air compressor receiver tank
- Air system electronic control system
The air system electronic control system is made up of the following components:
- Inlet air temperature sensor
- Discharge temperature sensor
- Dry side pressure sensor
- Wet side pressure sensor
- Compressor oil pressure sensor
- Bit air pressure sensor
- Control box solenoids
Reference: For additional information about the air system electronic control system, refer to the Service Manual module "Systems Operation, Electronic Control (Air System)" for the machine that is being serviced.
The air compressor (1) is driven by the engine through a coupling. The compressor pulls air through the intake filters and sends compressed air into the receiver tank (2). The main function of the compressed air system is to provide air to the drill bit to propel the particles out of the hole. A secondary function of the system is to provide auxiliary air.

Compressed Air System Overview
The compressor (2) is a rotary screw compressor unit. The package includes a compressor unit, cooling, and lubrication system, air inlet system, compressor discharge system, pressure control system, and instruments. The compressor unit supplied with the compressor (2) is a single stage positive displacement, fluid lubricated type rotary screw air compressor. As the rotors turn, air is drawn axially into the compressor (2) when the rotors turn past the intake port. The air is trapped between the rotor lobes and the compressor housing. With the rotors turning, the lobes reduce the volume in the cavities, compressing the trapped air and discharging into the receiver tank (1).

Compressed Air System Overview
The compressor unit supplied with the compressor (4) is a two stage positive displacement, flood lubricated type rotary screw air compressor. As the rotors turn, air is drawn axially into the compressor (5) when the rotors turn past the intake port in the first stage. At this point, the air is trapped between the rotor lobes and the compressor housing. With the rotors turning, the lobes reduce the volume in the cavities, compressing the trapped air where the air is then discharged into the second stage. This process happens again in the second stage of the compressor, where the air is further compressed to obtain a higher pressure.
Note: Two high-pressure compressors are available.
