------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from a parking brake malfunction. Do not operate the machine if the parking brake does not function correctly.

Be sure the parking brake components are adjusted correctly before attempting to return the machine to service.

Introduction

This information includes the following adjustment procedure:

  • Parking Brake Actuator - Adjust

Adjustment Preparation

  1. Park the machine on a smooth level surface.

  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Lower the bucket and/or any work tools to the ground.

  4. Engage the parking brake.

  5. Shut off the engine.

  6. Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  7. Install the steering frame lock.

  8. Allow only authorized personnel on the machine. Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine and in clear sight of the operator.

  9. Disengage the parking brake.

Prepare the machine for testing by completing the procedure that is specified in the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Park the machine on a dry, level surface. Block the tires securely in order to prevent movement of the machine when the parking brake is released.

  2. Start the engine. Allow the hydraulic oil to reach normal operating pressure.

  3. Push the parking brake control knob inward in order to release the parking brake.

  4. Remove cotter pin (4) and clevis pin (5) from rod end (11).

  5. Use the access hole on the frame plate in order to insert a 0.5 mm (.02 inch) feeler gauge between parking brake shoe lining (6) and brake drum (8). Rotate starwheel (7) until there is a snug fit between the brake shoe lining, the feeler gauge, and the brake drum.

  6. The parking brake control knob should be in the disengaged position. Actuator shaft (2) should be extended. Loosen locknut (3). Turn rod end (11) in order to obtain dimension (A). Dimension (A) equals 145 mm (5.7 inch).

  7. Manually rotate and hold lever (12) toward parking brake actuator (1) in order to take up slack between camshaft (10) and brake shoe lining (6). Rotate actuator shaft (2) relative to rod end (11) in order to install clevis pin (5). Tighten locknut (3) against actuator shaft (2).

  8. Install cotter pin (4) into clevis pin (5).

  9. Pull the parking brake knob outward, engaging the parking brake by releasing the hydraulic oil pressure in parking brake actuator (1). The stroke of actuator shaft (2) should not exceed dimension (B). Dimension (B) equals 37.0 mm (1.46 inch). If the stroke exceeds dimension (B), repeat Steps 2 to 8 in order to obtain dimension (B).

  10. After the parking brake has been adjusted, test the parking brake in order to ensure proper operation.

Reference: For more information on testing the parking brake, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Parking Brake - Test" for the machine that is being serviced.
