Alternate Cleaning Procedure for Particulate Trap Exhaust Filters{1091}

Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information.

Reason for the Alternate Cleaning Procedure

Customers have requested a heated cleaning procedure for Particulate Trap Exhaust Filters. The new alternate cleaning procedure deviates from the following Caterpillar documents.

  • Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7729, "C9 Urban Transit Bus Engine"

  • Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7011, "3126E Commercial and Truck Engines and 3126B Engine"

  • Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7926, "C7 Urban Transit Bus Engines "

  • Special Instruction, REHS1807, "Installation Guide for Diesel Particulate Filters"

Alternate Procedure for Cleaning the Particulate Trap Exhaust Filter

Understand the procedure below before you perform work. The following procedure must be followed exactly. Any deviation from this procedure can cause serious damage to the filter. The filter may fail emissions if the filter is not cleaned properly.

  1. Remove the module for the filter. Refer to following documentation for proper removal instructions.

    Note: Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1807, "Installation Guide for Diesel Particulate Filters" for instructions on the C13 Engines.

  1. Inspect the module for the filter. Refer to the following documentation for the proper instructions for inspection.

    Note: Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1807, "Installation Guide for Diesel Particulate Filters", "Inspecting the Diesel Particulate Filter" for instructions on the C13 Engines.

    Note: The procedure for cleaning by air must be complete before performing the procedure for cleaning with heat to prevent damage to the filter. The procedure for cleaning by air must be complete before performing the procedure for cleaning with heat to also prevent damage to the oven.

  1. Place the filter into an oven and proceed with the following steps.

    Note: A stationary batch oven with provisions to exhaust the excess hydrocarbon is required to clean the Particulate Trap Exhaust Filters.

    1. Increase the temperature of the oven to 250 °C (482 °F) in no less than a linear ramp rate of 30 minutes.

    1. Hold temperature at 250 °C (482 °F) for 15 minutes.

    1. Increase the temperature of the oven to 350 °C (662 °F) in no less than a linear ramp rate of 15 minutes.

    1. Hold the temperature at 350 °C (662 °F) for 30 minutes.

    1. Increase the temperature of the oven to 450 °C (842 °F) at no less than a linear ramp rate of 30 minutes.

    1. Hold temperature at 450 °C (842 °F) for 30 minutes.

    1. Increase the temperature of the oven to 600 °C (1112 °F) at no less than a linear ramp rate of 20 minutes.

    1. Hold temperature at 600 °C (1112 °F) for 30 minutes.

    1. Decrease the temperature of the oven from 600 °C (1112 °F) to 25 °C (77 °F)at no less than a linear ramp rate of 90 minutes.

  1. Allow the filter to cool in the oven with the closed door. Allow the filter to cool long enough so you can handle the filter with your bare hands.

  1. Reference the documentations in ""Reason for the Alternate Cleaning Procedure" " for service information for the Particulate Trap Exhaust Filter.

  1. Clean the module for the filter. Refer to the following documentation for the proper instructions for cleaning.
