Right side of the engine (later engine) (1) Timing pin (3) Plug |
- Remove the rear camshaft inspection cover from the side of the engine.
- Put the No. 1 piston at the Top Center Position on the compression stroke. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Finding the Top Center Position for the No. 1 Piston".
- With the No. 1 piston on the compression stroke, install the crankshaft timing pin. After you install the crankshaft timing pin, remove the camshaft timing pin from the camshaft timing pin's storage positions.
- On earlier engines, remove the rear camshaft inspection cover (2) from the side of the engine in order to gain access to the plug (3) .
- Remove the plug (3) .
- Install the camshaft timing pin (1) through the timing pin hole and into the hole in the camshaft (4). In order for the engine to be timed correctly, the camshaft timing pin must fit into the hole in the camshaft.

Installation of camshaft timing pin (1) Timing pin (4) Camshaft |
- If the timing pin (1) cannot be installed into the hole in the camshaft, the engine is not in time and the camshaft position must be adjusted. Refer to "Timing Adjustment of the Camshaft".
Timing Adjustment of the Camshaft
Note: Before you make any timing adjustments, the timing must be checked in order to determine whether any adjustment is necessary. Refer to the section "Camshaft Timing Check" for this procedure.
If the "Camshaft Timing Check"procedure indicates that the camshaft is not in time with the crankshaft, the camshaft drive gear must be removed and the camshaft must be rotated. Steps 1 through 7 should be used if adjustment of the camshaft is necessary.
- Put the No. 1 cylinder in the Top Center Position of the compression stroke and install the crankshaft timing pin. Remove all of the valve covers.
- Loosen bolts (5) that hold rocker arm shafts (6) in place, until all of the rocker arms are free from the valve bridges.

- Remove the crankshaft timing pin and camshaft drive gear cover (3) from the rear housing.

Typical Example Rear end of the 3606 engine (7) Camshaft drive gear cover |
- Loosen the camshaft drive gears (8) by using the following procedure:
- Remove bolt (12) and washer (11). Remove bolts (10) and plate (9) .
- Refer to the Illustration in Figure 6. Put washer (11) between the camshaft and plate (9). Install bolt (12) finger tight.
- Install bolts (10) finger tight.
- Tighten bolts (10) evenly in order to pull camshaft drive gear (8) off the taper of the camshaft.
Show/hide tableSudden movement of camshaft drive gear can occur when the camshaft drive gear is pulled off the taper of the camshaft. To prevent possibly personal injury, be sure that the bolt is installed (finger tight) to restrict the movement of the camshaft drive gear when the camshaft drive gear is pulled off of the taper of the camshaft.

- Install the crankshaft timing pin. Remove the camshaft timing pin from the storage location.

Installation of the camshaft timing pin (1) Timing pin |
- Put camshaft timing pin (1) in the timing pin hole, and turn the camshaft until the timing pin goes into the hole in the camshaft.
- After the camshaft is in time with the crankshaft, tighten the camshaft drive gear (4). Use the following procedure:
- Remove bolts (10) and (12), plate (9) and washer (11) .
- Install washer (11) and bolt (12). Tighten bolt (12) by hand.
- Remove the crankshaft timing pin and the camshaft timing pin.
- Turn the flywheel in the opposite direction of normal rotation for a minimum of 20 degrees.
- Turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation until the crankshaft timing pin can be reinstalled in the crankshaft. This procedure holds the backlash in the timing gears in the direction of normal engine rotation.
Note: Prelube the engine before you rotate the crankshaft in order to perform service work. Rotating the crankshaft before prelube may cause damage to the crankshaft bearings if the mating surface is dry.
- Install the camshaft timing pin in order to verify the camshaft position. In order to prevent damage to the timing pins, remove the crankshaft timing pin and the camshaft timing pin before you tighten bolt (12) .
Show/hide tableNOTICE If the crankshaft timing pin location is missed, do not turn the flywheel in the opposite direction in order to install the crankshaft timing pin.
Note: If the crankshaft timing pin location is missed, repeat Steps 7.d and 7.e.
- Use a 6V-6080 Torque Multiplier and a 5P-1748 Socket, and tighten bolt (12) to a torque of 2000 ± 275 N·m (1480 ± 200 lb ft).
- Use a hammer to strike the plate (9). Repeat Step 7.g.
- Repeat Step 7.h, until there is no movement of the gear on the shaft at full torque.
- Repeat the "Camshaft Timing Check" procedure to verify the correct crankshaft to camshaft timing. Refer to the section "Camshaft Timing Check". If the camshaft timing is not correct, repeat the "Timing Adjustment of the Camshaft"procedure.
- Remove the crankshaft timing pin and camshaft timing pin. Return the pins to the storage locations. Install the camshaft inspection covers on the side of the cylinder block.
- Install the camshaft drive gear cover (7) on the rear housing.
- Tighten the bolts that hold the rocker arm shafts in position, and adjust the valve lash.
- Install the valve covers.
