Introduction
This information includes the following test:
- Parking Brake Control cable - Adjust
Adjust Preparation
Prepare the machine for testing by completing the procedure that is specified in the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".
This procedure should be used when the parking brake does not engage properly.
The parking brake may not engage properly if the following conditions exist:
- The parking brake control cable is stretched.
- The parking brake control cable is damaged.
If these conditions exist install new parking brake control cable. Use the following procedure to adjust the parking brake control cable.

- Center bulkhead nuts (13) on bracket (14). Tighten the bulkhead nuts to a torque of 38 ± 7 N·m (28 ± 5 lb ft).
- Extend the parking brake control cable until cable end (6) is all the way out. This cable end is for parking brake control knob (1). Keep the parking brake control cable in this position during Step 3.
- With the parking brake cable and linkage in the engaged position, thread rod end (10) onto cable end (12). Thread until the hole in the rod end is in alignment with the hole in lever assembly (7). Turn rod end (10) clockwise for an additional ten full turns. Be sure that you align the hole in the rod end with the hole in the lever assembly.
- If necessary, reposition bulkhead nuts (13) on bracket (14) in order to correctly position rod end (10) in Step 3.
- Tighten jam nut (11) against rod end (10) to a torque of 8 ± 3 N·m (6 ± 2 lb ft).
- Install clevis pin (8), and cotter pin (9) .
- Position bulkhead nuts (4) on cable end (6) into bracket (5) .
- Tighten bulkhead nuts (4) to a torque of 38 ± 7 N·m (28 ± 5 lb ft).
- Install grommet (3) onto cable end (6). Install the grommet into bracket (5). Thread nut (2) onto the cable end. Thread parking brake control knob (1) onto the cable end.
- Thread nut (2) against parking brake control knob (1). Tighten the nut to a torque of 8 ± 3 N·m (6 ± 2 lb ft).
After the control cable has been adjusted, the parking brake should be tested for proper operation.
ReferenceFor more information on testing the parking brake, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Parking Brake - Test" for the machine that is being serviced.
