Check Height Of Locating Dowels Before Installing Cylinder Head{1201}

Usage:

All 3500 Series Engines

There have been reports of incorrect cylinder head installations on 3500 Series Engines. The dowels in the cylinder block (see illustration) must extend 20.0 ± 0.5 mm (.79 ± .02") from the face of the block to locate the cylinder head during installation.

Cylinder block and head installation.

Incorrect cylinder head location (during installation) can cause problems with the intake and exhaust manifolds and uneven wear of the camshaft and lifters. Check dowel height before installing a cylinder head on the above engines. Be sure the cylinder head is positioned over the dowels before the head is lowered onto the block.

NOTE: The dowels can be pushed into the block if they contact the bottom surface of the head during installation.
