The reduced rimpull switch has four inputs to the ECM. During normal operation, three of the inputs are open and the other input is grounded. The diagnostic code is detected when all of the inputs are open or shorted to the +battery. Before you perform this procedure use Table 1 to determine the connector and the contacts that correspond to the faulty circuit. The diagnostic code is set in five seconds and the diagnostic code is cleared in one second.
Possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
- There is a problem in the harness.
- The switch failed.
System Response:
The machine response is listed:
- Reduced rimpull is disabled.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE SWITCH CIRCUIT.
- Ensure that the diagnostic code is active.
- Disconnect the connector of the reduced rimpull switch from the machine harness.
Expected Result:
The active diagnostic code changes from "04" to "03".
Results:
- YES - The rimpull switch or the switch harness has failed.
Repair: Repair the switch or replace the switch and the switch harness.
Repeat the Test Step in order to verify failure of the reduced rimpull switch.
- NO - The diagnostic code indicator remains on. The reduced rimpull switch is not the cause of this diagnostic code. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESS CIRCUIT.
This test checks the continuity of the entire harness circuit that is faulty. The reduced rimpull switch which was previously checked in Test Step 1 is included in this Test Step.
- Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Connect the reduced rimpull switch of Step 1 to the machine harness.
- Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
- At the machine harness connector for the ECM, check the continuity to ground of the switch contacts with the reduced rimpull switch that is activated and with the reduced rimpull switch that is not activated. Refer to Table 1 for the correct switch status.
Expected Result:
The continuity check does NOT agree with Table 1.
Results:
- YES - The continuity check does NOT agree with the information in the table. The harness circuit is faulty. There is a short to ground in the machine harness between the ECM and the reduced rimpull switch.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
- NO - The continuity check agrees with the information in the table. The harness circuit is correct. It is unlikely that the ECM is faulty. Exit this procedure and perform CID 0138 FMI 04 again.
Repair: If the cause is not found, replace the ECM. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" for more information on replacing the ECM.
