Start By:

  1. Remove the front bottom guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bottom Guard - Remove".

  2. Remove the hood. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hood - Remove and Install".

  3. Remove the front side guard from both sides of the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Side Guards - Remove and Install".

Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL PROCEDURE. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. The capacity of the cooling system is approximately 53 L (14 US gal).

  2. Remove bolts (1) that secure hydraulic oil cooler (2). (Bottom bolts (1) are not shown.) Secure hydraulic oil cooler (2) out of the way.

  3. Remove bolts (3) and fan guard assemblies (4).

  4. Remove bolt (5).

  5. Remove bolts (7). Disconnect harness assembly (6) and move the filter assembly out of the way.

  6. Disconnect aftercooler hose (8) and radiator hose (9).

  7. Cut all cable straps (11). Disconnect harness assemblies (10).

  8. Disconnect hose assemblies (12).

  9. Disconnect aftercooler hose (8) and radiator hose (9).

  10. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to radiator guard (13). The cooling package will be removed with radiator guard (13). The weight of the cooling package is approximately 295 kg (650 lb).

  11. Remove bolts (14).

  12. Repeat Step 11 for the other side.

  13. Remove the cooling package from the machine.

  14. Remove bolts (16) and open grill (15).

  15. Remove eight bolts (17).

  16. Close grill (15) and reinstall bolts (16). Refer to Illustration 11.

  17. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to position cooling package (13) in a horizontal position on suitable blocking with grill (15) facing downward. The weight of the cooling package is approximately 295 kg (650 lb).

  18. Remove bolts (19) and position harness assembly (18) out of the way.

  19. Remove bolts (20) and remove plates (21).

  20. Remove two seals (22).

  21. Remove bolts (24) and bracket (23).

  22. Repeat Step 21 for the other side.

  23. Remove bolt (26) that secures the harness assembly. Remove bolts (25) and remove both halves of shroud (27).

  24. Install suitable lifting sling (28) on aftercooler (29), as shown. Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device. The weight of the components for the cooling package is approximately 113 kg (250 lb).

  25. Remove bolts (30) and remove the components of the cooling package from radiator guard (31). The radiator assembly, the oil cooler, and the aftercooler are removed as a unit.

  26. Remove bolts (32) and bottom plate (33).

  27. Remove bolts (34) and plate (35).

  28. Repeat Step 27 for the other side.

  29. Use a suitable lifting device to remove aftercooler (29). The weight of the aftercooler is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

  30. Use a suitable lifting device to remove radiator (36). The weight of the radiator is approximately 50 kg (110 lb).

  31. Use a suitable lifting device to remove oil cooler (37). The weight of the oil cooler is approximately 36 kg (80 lb).
