Start By:

  1. Remove the final drives and the sprocket assemblies. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive and Sprocket - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.

  2. Remove the track brakes. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track Brake - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.


    NOTICE

    Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

    Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

    Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the final drive.

    Note: The drain plug on the final drive must be in the lowest position in order to ensure that as much oil as possible can be drained from the final drive.

  2. Place the final drive on Tooling (A) (not shown) with the side that bolts to the frame DOWNWARD.

  3. Place an alignment mark on one of the sprocket segments for the ease of installation. Remove bolts (1) and sprocket segments (2).

    Note: Remove all the bolts and the sprocket segments.

  4. Remove six bolts (3) and gear cover (4).

  5. Fasten a hoist and Tooling (B) to sun gear (5), as shown. Remove sun gear (5).

  6. Remove six bolts (6) that hold carrier (7) to the sprocket hub.

  7. Attach a hoist and Tooling (B) to carrier (7), as shown. Remove carrier (7). The weight of carrier (7) is 79 kg (175.0 lb).

  8. Flip carrier (7). Remove six bolts (8) that hold plate (9) to carrier (7).

  9. Use three forcing bolts (10) in order to remove plate (9), as shown.

  10. Install Tooling (D), as shown. Remove the gear and bearing assembly (11).

  11. Remove nine bolts (12), retainer (13) and ring gear (14).

  12. Remove O-ring (15).

  13. Install Tooling (E) with retainer (13) in order to remove sprocket hub (16).

  14. Install Tooling (B) and lifting straps in order to steady sprocket hub (16) as the sprocket is removed. The weight of the sprocket hub is 68.8 kg (152.0 lb).

  15. Remove bearing cup (17).

  16. Remove bearing cup (18).

  17. Remove seal ring (19) and the toric ring, only if the Duo-cone seal kit will be replaced.

  18. Remove nineteen bolts (20) from spindle (21).

  19. Attach Tooling (B) and retainer (13) to spindle (21), as shown. Use three guide bolts (22) in order to prevent damage to the drive gear bearing. The weight of the spindle is 127 kg (282.0 lb).

  20. Remove three guide bolts (22).

  21. Support shaft (23) while the spindle is removed.

  22. Remove shaft (23).

  23. Use Tooling (F) in order to remove bearing (24) from shaft (23).

  24. Use Tooling (F) in order to remove bearing (25) from the spindle.

  25. Remove seal ring (26) and the toric ring, if the Duo-cone seal kit will be replaced.

  26. Remove bearing cup (27) with Tooling (G).

  27. Remove gear (28).

  28. Remove bearing (29) with Tooling (F).

  29. Remove thrust plate (30).

  30. Remove bearing cup (31) from the final drive housing.
