Start By:

  1. Remove the heat exchanger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Heat Exchanger - Remove".

Note: The following story is for 373-2565 Sea Water Heat Exchanger Gp.

Note: The disassembly procedure can be performed on the engine.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies and all plate assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies to prevent fluid loss, and to keep contaminants from entering the systems.

  1. Use suitable cribbing to place the heat exchanger in a flat position on the rear frame. This position can help ensure proper alignment during the procedure.

  2. Remove bolts (1) and the spacers. Install Tooling (B).

  3. Apply Tooling (C) to the threads of the nut and the threads of the guide stud prior to installation. Install the thrust bearing, the hard washer, and the nuts on the guide stud. Ensure that Tooling (B) is securely installed.

  4. Place two nuts together and tighten the outer nut in order to install Tooling (B). Position the thrust bearing, the hard washer, and one nut against the front frame.

  7. Loosen the nuts on Tooling (B) evenly. Ensure that Tooling (B) does not loosen from the rear frame.

Note: Do not loosen the nuts more than one turn per nut until the heat exchanger plates are no longer compressed.

Note: As the front frame rises, the heat exchanger plates will slide along Tooling (A).

  8. Remove Tooling (B).

Note: Note the order and orientation of the heat exchanger plates and the seals during removal.

  9. Remove front frame (2), heat exchanger plates (6), and the seals.

Note: A seal may stick to the front frame during removal.

Note: Check the O-ring seals and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

  11. Remove the zinc plugs from elbow (19) and elbow (20). Remove elbow (19) and elbow (20) from rear frame (8). Note the orientation of the elbows prior to removal.

  12. Remove bolts (9). Remove cover (10) and O-ring seal (13). Remove water temperature regulators (15). Remove lip seals (18) from rear frame (8).

  13. Remove pressure cap (11).

  14. Remove bolts (14).

  15. Remove filler neck (16). Remove O-ring seal (17).

  16. Remove hose connector (12) from the filler neck.

Instructions for Cleaning

  • Clean the plates with a coarse nylon brush or new Tooling (D).

  • Do not use a dirty Tooling (D), steel wool, or a wire brush, which may scratch the titanium plates. Any iron scratches in the titanium plates can lead to corrosion of the plates.

  • The recommended cleaning solution for scale buildup (calcium carbonate) and sediment buildup (corrosion products) is a 4 percent solution of nitric, citric, or sulfuric acid.

  • The recommended cleaning solution for cleaning biological growth is a 4 percent solution of sodium hydroxide.

  • Rinse plates thoroughly with water.
