Installation Instructions for the Remotely Mounted Engine Oil Filter{1316} Caterpillar

973C (S/N: 3RZ1-740)

Introduction

This Special Instruction explains the rework procedure for the installation of the remotely mounted engine oil filter. This new setup of the filter is designed for ease of maintenance.

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.

1. Assemble the new oil filter base by performing the following steps:

   1. Install relief valve plungers (18), springs (17), and spacer (27) into oil filter base assembly (20) .

   2. Place gasket (41) and cover (21) into the correct position on the oil filter base assembly. Install bolts (1), bolt (2), and bolt (3) in order to secure the cover.

   3. Install fluid sampling valve (6) with O-ring seal (11) into cover (21). Install dust cap (5) onto the fluid sampling valve.

   4. Install O-ring seal (24) onto the stud at point (C) .

2. Remove the existing engine oil filter and the filter base from the machine.

3. Use the following parts in order to install the new filter base onto the machine: two 5P-8118 O-Ring Seals , three 1H-5514 Bolts , one 1D-4540 Bolt and four 9M-1974 Hard Washers .

4. Position base adapter (22) with O-ring seal (10) over the stud in the oil filter base assembly. Install jam nut (9) onto the stud.

   Note: Do not tighten jam nut (9) at this time.

5. Install elbow (35) with O-ring seals (14) and (7) into the base adapter. Install elbow (34) with O-ring seals (14) and (7) into the stud of the oil filter base assembly.

   Note: Do not tighten elbow (34) or (35) at this time.

6. Replace the existing air cleaner bracket with bracket assembly (48) .

7. Use bolts (32) and three washers (30) in order to assemble base (42) onto the new air cleaner bracket.

8. Use three bolts (38), two bolts (36), and washers (19) in order to install oil filter base assembly (40) with the seals (8) onto base (42) .

9. Install adapter (23) with O-ring seal (37) into the top port of base (42). Install elbow (29) into the adapter. Install fluid sampling valve (43) with dust cap (44) into the elbow.

10. Install spring (15) into bypass valve (4). Install this assembly into the side port of oil filter base assembly (40) .

11. Install plug (25) with O-ring seal (16) into the port.

12. Install plug (28) with O-ring seal (12) into base (42) .

13. Install elbow (34) with O-ring seals (14) and (7) into base (42) .

    Note: Do not tighten elbow (34) at this time.

14. Install tube assembly (46). Tighten elbow (34) from the previous step and elbow (34) from Step 5 at this time.

15. Install connector (33) with O-ring seals (14) and (12) into base (42). Install swivel elbow (39) with O-ring seal (14) into the connector.

16. Install tube assembly (45). Tighten elbow (35) from Step 5 and jam nut (9) from Step 4 at this time. Tighten the jam nut to a torque of 149 ± 20 N·m (110 ± 15 lb ft).

17. Remove two of the uppermost bolts that secure the pump drive housing to the flywheel housing. Attach bracket (47) to the outside of the pump drive housing with the bolts that were removed.

18. Attach clamps (13) to the tube assemblies. Secure the clamps to bracket (47) with bolt (31) and washer (30) .

19. Assemble engine oil filter (26) to the new filter base.
