When testing and adjusting the transmission and power train, move the machine to an area clear of obstructions, with safe exhaust ventilation for the exhausts. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, do the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the transmission and power train. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
NOTICE |
---|
To ensure that the transmission oil does not overheat do not keep the torque converter in the stall condition for more than 30 seconds. After the torque converter stall test allow the transmission oil to cool before stopping the engine. |
Before you begin the test, refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".
Required Tools     | |||
Tool     | Part Number     | Description     | Qty     |
A     | 198-4240     | Digital Pressure Indicator     | 1     |
B     | 1U-5481     | Pressure Gauge Group     | 1     |
The following test will determine if the torque converter is operating correctly. The test will also determine if there is oil flow through the oil cooler.

- Operate the machine until the transmission oil is at an operating temperature of 80 °C (176 °F).
- Stop the machine on a hard level surface. Move the transmission control lever to the NEUTRAL position. Lower the bowl. Turn the engine to the off position.
Note: The drive wheels must not turn during a stall test. Lower the bowl into the ground or put the tractor against a solid object that will not move.
- Remove plug (1). Install Tooling (B) .
- Attach Tooling (A) to the port.
- Start the engine. Run the engine at LOW IDLE with the transmission control lever in NEUTRAL.
- Make sure that air pressure is at the normal pressure for operation. Push the brake pedal and hold the brake pedal DOWN. Make sure that the parking brake and the secondary brake are RELEASED.
- Move the transmission control lever to FOURTH speed. Run the engine at HIGH IDLE. The pressure on the gauge must be 415 ± 35 kPa (60 ± 5 psi).
Note: The machine will try to move during this step.
- Move the transmission control lever to NEUTRAL. Engage the parking brake. Remove the test equipment.
- Stop the engine. Remove the test equipment.
- Install plug (1) .
