The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects all of the following conditions:
- The engine has been running for at least ten seconds.
- Coolant flow is lost for at least two seconds.
- The ground level shutdown switch has not been used in order to shut down the engine.
System Response:
The ECM will log the warning. The warning lamp will flash and the warning will be transmitted to the display. The ECM will reset the warning if coolant flow resumes for at least one second.
Possible Performance Effect:
- None
Troubleshooting:
- There may be a problem with the cooling system.
- There may be a problem with the coolant flow switch.
- There may be a problem with the ground level shutdown switch.
Test Step 1. Check for Diagnostic Codes
- Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector.
- Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
- Check for any active diagnostic codes and/or logged diagnostic codes.
Expected Result:
No diagnostic codes are present.
Results:
- OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.
- Not OK -
Repair: Repair the diagnostic codes that are present. Refer to the appropriate topic in the "Troubleshooting With a Diagnostic Code" section of this manual.
Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.

Test Step 2. Perform a Check of the Cooling System
- Perform a check of the cooling system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature is Too High" for possible causes.
Expected Result:
There are no problems with the cooling system.
Results:
- OK - There may be an intermittent problem.
Repair: Monitor the operation of the engine.
Repair the problem.
Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.
