Differential Pinion - Disassemble

Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the differential pinion. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Differential Pinion - Remove".

Note: The same disassembly procedure is used for the front differential pinion and for the rear differential pinion.

  1. Remove guard (2) .

  1. Remove six bolts (3) and the washers. Remove retainer (4) .

  1. Remove lip seal (6) from retainer (4) .

  1. Use a hammer and a punch in order to bend the crimp in nut (8) away from the slot in pinion shaft (12) .

    Note: Nut (8) may be reused if the collar is not cracked during removal or during restaking.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove nut (8) from pinion shaft (12) .

  1. Remove washer (9) from pinion shaft (12) .

  1. Put the pinion housing (1) in a suitable press. Remove pinion shaft (12) from pinion housing (1) by pressing the shaft out of bearing cone (10) .

  1. Use a suitable press and Tooling (B) to remove bearing cone (7) from pinion shaft (12) .

  1. Remove bearing cone (10) from pinion housing (1) .

  1. Remove bearing cup (11) from pinion housing (1) .

  1. Remove bearing cup (5) and the O-ring seal from the opposite end of pinion housing (1) .
