Guidelines For The Reusability Of Studs And Bolts {1100, 1203, 1218}

Usage:

3618 2MW
Engines:
3618 (S/N: 2MW)

Use these guidelines to determine the reusability of the following 3618 Engine components: cylinder head studs, main bearing cap studs, main bearing cap cross tie bolts and connecting rod cap bolts.

An overall length has been specified as the maximum acceptable limit for reusability of these bolts and studs. Formerly, these bolts and studs were tightened to a maximum number of times. These bolts and studs will permanently elongate when these bolts and studs are tightened past a certain load level. This elongation is cumulative with each tightening. This allows a maximum limit for the overall length to be established.

Before you reuse one of these bolts or studs, perform the following checks:

  1. All of fasteners should be thoroughly inspected before the fasteners are reused. Do not reuse a fastener that has any of the problems that follow: rust, nicks, thread damage, cracks, pits, deformations and any other damage.

  1. If the fastener passes Step 1, measure the length of the fastener. The illustrations show the dimensions to be measured.

    This illustration shows the location of Dimension (D) of a 142-0142 Main Bearing Cap Cross Tie Bolt .

  1. For a 137-4048 Cylinder Head Stud, the maximum length for dimension (A) is 769.50 mm (30.295 inch).

    For a 137-0134 Connecting Rod Bolt, the maximum length for dimension (B) is 246.20 mm (9.693 inch).

    For a 137-4047 Main Bearing Cap Stud, the maximum length for dimension (C) is 698.50 mm (27.500 inch).

    For a 142-0142 Main Bearing Cap Cross Tie Bolt, the maximum length for dimension (D) is 280.50 mm (11.043 inch).

  1. If the dimension for maximum length is exceeded, replace that bolt or that stud.
