Usage:

GSH15 H2X

Inspecting the Tip

Illustration 1g01158335

Wear or damage at the tip will result in reduced operating convenience.

Inspect the tip (2) for wear. If the tip is blunt or damaged, the tip should be replaced.

Note: If wear or damage is notice at one or more tips, all tips must be replaced.

Replacing the Tip

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this machine or work tool unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals and Owner's Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden work tool movement.

Sudden movement of the work tool can cause injury to persons near the work tool.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the work tool is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the work tool.

----------------------

  1. Clean the grapple before performing any repairs.

  1. Inspect the grapple. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Daily Inspection" for additional information.

  1. Perform all other repairs before replacing the tips.

Removing the Tip

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from flame cutting or welding on painted areas.

The effect of gasses from burned paint is a hazard to the person doing the cutting or welding.

Do not flame cut or weld on painted areas.

----------------------

  1. Remove all the paint from the tip (2) and from the shell (1) .

    Illustration 3g01158342

  1. Flame cut the welds away from the tip (2) and the shell (1) .

Note: Start flame cutting from the tip's side of the weld and cut toward the welds. Refer to illustration 3 for the proper cutting direction. Stop cutting when you reach the shell's surface. The tip is scrapped metal.

  1. Remove the tip (2) from the shell (1) .

  1. Grind the contact surface flat.

Installing the Tip

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from fumes, gases and ultraviolet rays from the weld arc.

Welding can cause fumes, burn skin and produce ultraviolet rays.

Keep your head out of the fumes. Use ventilation, exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing area. Wear eye, ear and body protection before working.

Protect yourself and others; read and understand this warning. Fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health. Ultraviolet rays from the weld arc can injure eyes and burn skin. Electric shock can cause death.

Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions and your employer's safety practices. Do not touch live electrical parts.

(1) Shell

(2) Tip

(3) Ruler

  1. Position tip (2) on shell (1) of the GSH Grapple.

  1. Tack weld the tip (2) onto the shell (1) on the inside. Use the following welding materials in order to weld the tip onto the shell:

    • AWS A5.28-96:ER100S-G

  1. Repeat the above steps for all the other shells (1) .

  1. Close the shells (1) on the GSH Grapple.

  1. Position the tips (2) on all the shells in relation to each other.

    Illustration 6g01307511

  1. Check the end stops. If necessary, repair the end stops.

Note: The end stops must be closed without any play between the contact surfaces of the end stops.

    Illustration 7g01157274

  1. Preheat the surface of the tip (2) and the shell (1) to 150 °C (302 °F) to 200 °C (392 °F).

    Illustration 8g01325597

  1. Weld the tips (2). Refer to illustration 7. Refer to illustration 8 for the weld specifications. Use the following welding materials in order to weld the tips:

    • AWS A5.28-96:ER100S-G

  1. The welds must cool slowly with no forced air. Allow the welds to reach and ambient temperature.

  1. Close the shells (1) on the GSH Grapple.

  1. Check the end stops. If necessary, repair the end stops.

Note: The end stops must be closed without any play between the contact surfaces of the end stops.

Painting the Tip and Shell

  1. Clean all of the parts.

  1. Paint the welded areas with primer.

  1. Allow the primer to completely dry.

  1. Paint the welded areas with a final coat of paint.

Returning to Operation

The hydraulic system must be purged of air before the work tool can be returned to operation.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from improperly checking for a leak.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. Escaping air or fluid under pressure, even a pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue causing serious injury, and possible death.

If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Purge the hydraulic system for the grapple after work has been completed. If there is air in the hydraulic system under pressure, the oil can spontaneously ignite. Failure to purge the hydraulic system will result in damage to the work tool. Personal injury or death can result from failure to purge the hydraulic system.
