Improved Engine Oil Coolers are Now Used {1378}

Description of Change: The engines that are listed above contain an oil cooler that has been improved. All of the improvements are effective with the date code 05-038. These improvements were made in order to improve the structure of the oil cooler. The new improvements were made in order to reduce fatigue and cracking of the oil cooler.

Note: The source of the contamination is not the oil cooler if oil reappears in the coolant after replacing the oil cooler. The coolant was not adequately flushed. Flush the system again and check the system again for signs of oil contamination. Look for other sources of contamination that may be entering the engine lubrication system.

Engine Oil Cooler Core

(1) Location of the date code

Install the improved 187-8595 Engine Oil Cooler Core (2) to the engine.

Oil filter base

Install the oil filter base onto the replaced engine oil cooler core.

Tighten the oil filter base to the following torque. Use the torque sequence that is shown in illustration 2 to ensure proper sealing. ... 15 N·m (133.0 lb in)

Tighten the oil filter base again to the following torque. Use the torque sequence that is shown in illustration 2 to ensure proper sealing. ... 28 N·m (248.0 lb in)

The date code is stamped or imprinted on the engine oil cooler core. The first two numbers on the date code represent the year of the improved part. The last three numbers on the date code represent the day out of the year for the improvement.

If the cooling system has been found to be contaminated with oil, flush the cooling system and ensure that no oil remains in the cooling system. Use the following procedure to ensure that the cooling system is free of residue from the oil:

  1. Drain all of the coolant from the cooling system.

  1. Fill the cooling system with only clean water.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine until the thermostat opens.

    Note: Do not use laundry detergent in order to clean the cooling system.

  1. Add 0.473 L (0.5 qt) of soap that does not create a foam. Automatic dishwasher detergents work best.

  1. After the detergent is added to the cooling system, run the engine for approximately 20 minutes. Check the oil for signs of breaking up. Also, check the water for patches of oil.

  1. If patches of oil are present, add 0.473 L (0.5 qt) of detergent and run the engine for 10 minutes. Drain the soap and water from the cooling system.

  1. Fill the cooling system with only clean water. Check the surface of the water for patches of oil. If the cooling system is still contaminated, repeat steps 1 through 6 until the cooling system is free of residue that is created from the oil.

  1. Once the cooling system becomes free of residue that is created from the oil, add coolant and conditioner to the cooling system.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the proper mixture of coolant and water.
