( 1 ) | Tool (A) is a 46 mm socket. |
Start By:
- Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install".
- Remove the flywheel housing in order for the rear main bearing to be removed. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing- Remove and Install".
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Remove two bolts (1) that hold crankshaft main bearing cap (2). Remove crankshaft main bearing cap (2) .
Note: Be careful not to damage the bearings. Match each crankshaft main bearing cap and main bearing in order to ensure installation in the original location. The crankshaft main bearing caps are marked one through six and the caps have arrows that point to the front of the engine block. The rear main bearing cap is not numbered.

- Use a suitable soft tool and carefully push upper bearing (3) on the side opposite the bearing tab in order to remove the bearing tab from the tab groove of the bearing housing.
- Install Tool (A) on the nut of the crankshaft. Carefully rotate the crankshaft in order to remove the upper half of crankshaft main bearing (3). The crankshaft must be rotated in the correct direction so that the tab end of the bearing is removed first.
Note: Be careful not to damage the bearings. Mark each main bearing in order to ensure installation in the original location.

NOTICE |
---|
If the crankshaft is turned in the wrong direction, the tab of the crankshaft main bearing will be pushed between the crankshaft and the cylinder block. this can cause damage to either or both the crankshaft and the cylinder block. |
- Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the removal of the remaining crankshaft main bearings.
Note: Check the condition of the crankshaft main bearings. Refer to the Guideline For Reusable Parts, SEBF8009, "Main and Connecting Rod Bearings" or refer to the Special Publication, SEBD0531, "Engine Bearings and Crankshafts".
- Remove thrust washers (4) and seals (5) from rear main cap (6) .
Note: Refer to the Specifications Module, "Main Bearing Journal" for more information on crankshaft main bearings and the main bearing journals.
