Diagnostic Flash Code Retrieval

Usage:

3176B 9WK

"Diagnostic" Lamp

Use the "DIAGNOSTIC" Lamp or a Caterpillar electronic service tool to determine the diagnostic flash code.

Use the following procedure to retrieve the diagnostic codes if the engine is equipped with a "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp:

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. The engine does not need to be started in order to view codes. The engine does not need to be running while the ignition switch is in the ON position. The sequence that follows occurs when the ignition key is turned to the ON position and when the engine is started.

    • The "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp comes on and the "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp will remain on for five seconds.

    • The "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp goes off for five seconds.

    • The "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp will come on again and the "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp will flash codes for active diagnostic codes.

    • The "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp goes off for five seconds.

    • The "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp repeats all active diagnostic codes.

Note: When the ignition key is in the ON position, the lamp is checked for proper operation. Any active diagnostic codes are displayed at this time. Code 34 is not displayed at this time.

  1. Any active diagnostic codes will be flashed.

  1. The "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp will flash in order to indicate a two-digit code. The sequence of flashes represents the system diagnostic message. Each digit of the two-digit code is determined by counting the number of flashes. The lamp flashes at a rate of two times per second. The lamp will pause for one second between digits. The lamp will pause for two seconds between codes.

Note: If the condition that generated a code happened for only a brief moment, then the "DIAGNOSTIC" lamp will shut off for five seconds. The code is then logged by the ECM.

Table 1 indicates the potential effect on the engine performance with active flash codes. Table 1 also forms a list of Electronic diagnostic codes and descriptions.

There are some codes which record an event rather than a response to a performance problem. Troubleshooting is not required for the following codes: 35, 41, 47 and 55. Code 01 will not flash. Some codes will limit operation or performance of the engine. Acceleration rates with these codes may be significantly slower.

( 1 ) Shut down the Engine: Operate the engine cautiously. Get immediate service. Severe engine damage may result.
( 2 ) The operator should go to the nearest location for service.
( 3 ) The operator should investigate the problem at a convenient time.
( 4 ) The Diagnostic Flash Codes reduce the effectiveness of the Engine Monitoring feature.
( 5 ) These Diagnostic Flash Codes may affect the system only under specific environmental conditions such as engine start-up at cold temperatures, etc.
