Indicator for Low Coolant Level - Troubleshoot

Usage:

3412C 4BZ
In order to find the cause of a low coolant level shutdown, perform this procedure.

Note: The engine may come with a factory equipped coolant loss sensor. This sensor will be wired to the spare fault input. This sensor will illuminate Indicator 5. Indicator 5 will be labelled as the Engine Coolant Level Indicator Lamp.

Note: This procedure requires the Remote Start Switch to be opened and/or closed many times. In order to ease the troubleshooting process, a switch that is locally acquired can be connected to the terminals of the Remote Start Signal that are located in the customer connection box. The terminals for the Remote Start Signal are terminal 57 and terminal 30.

  1. Check The Coolant Level.

    1. Check the level of the engine coolant. Refer to the Operation And Maintenance Manual for the engine.

Expected Result: The coolant level should be at the proper height and the coolant level should be above the probe of the coolant loss sensor.

      Results:

      • OK: Proceed to the next Step.

      • Not OK: The coolant level is not correct. Find the cause and correct the cause. Refer to the Engine Service Manual. STOP.

  1. Check The Low Coolant Level Function (Check 1).

    1. Open the Remote Start Switch and then close the Remote Start Switch.

    1. Wait from 15 seconds to 20 seconds.

Expected Result: The engine continues to run and the indicator for the engine coolant level is OFF.

      Results:

      • OK: The fault may be intermittent. Check the harness and all electrical connections of the low coolant level circuit. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electrical Connector Inspection". STOP.

      • Not OK: The engine shuts down and the indicator for the engine coolant level is ON. Proceed to the next Step.

  1. Check The Low Coolant Level Function (Check 2).

    1. Disconnect the engine harness connector from the coolant loss sensor.

    1. Open the Remote Start Switch and then close the Remote Start Switch.

    1. Wait from 15 seconds to 20 seconds.

Expected Result: The engine continues to run and the indicator for the coolant level is OFF.

      Results:

      • OK: Therefore, the engine coolant loss sensor (ECLS) is faulty. Replace the ECLS. STOP.

      • Not OK: The engine shuts down and the indicator for the engine coolant level is ON. The engine and/or control panel wiring that is between Contact 12 of the control board and Contact "C" of the connector for the ECLS is shorted to "B-". Contact 12 is the connector for the spare fault. Troubleshoot the harness for the shorted wire. See Schematics And Wiring Diagrams. Repair the wiring or replace the wiring. STOP.
