Gearbox Oil and Oil Filter - Change

Usage:

G3606 3XF
Ensure that the machinery will not operate when this maintenance is performed. Attach a "DO NOT OPERATE" tag or similar warning tag to the controls before performing maintenance or repairs.

When the oil for the gearbox is changed, also clean the breather and change the oil filter.

Typical gearbox

(1) Cover

(2) Drain valve

(3) Breather cap

Note: Dispose of fluids according to local regulations.

  1. Prepare a suitable container in order to catch the oil.

  1. Open drain valve (2) and allow the oil to drain. After the oil has drained, close the drain valve.

  1. Remove cover (1) .

Visually inspect the inside of the gearbox. Look for debris and metal shavings. Inspect the gear and the gear teeth.

If the inside of the gearbox is normal, pour oil into the gearbox. For the proper oil to use, see this Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Information" (Maintenance Section ). For the amount of oil to use, see this Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" (Maintenance Section ).

  1. Install cover (1) .

Cleaning the Breather

  1. Remove the breather cap. Remove the element.

  1. Clean the element in clean, nonflammable solvent. Allow the element to dry.

  1. Clean the inside of the breather body. Clean the breather cap.

  1. Saturate the element with the same oil that is used in the gearbox. Drain excess oil from the element.

  1. Install the element. Install the breather cap.

Changing the Oil Filter

Change the oil filter when any of these conditions occur:

  • The plunger of the indicator rises to the red range.

  • The differential pressure of the filter rises to 241 kPa (35 psi) .

  • Every 2500 service hours or six months

(1) Indicator

(2) Filter

  1. Remove filter (2) with a 1U-8760 Chain Wrench . Dispose of the used filter.

  1. Clean the sealing surface of the filter mounting base.

  1. Apply clean oil to the new filter gasket. Use the same oil that is used in the gearbox.
