Adjustment Procedure (Off Machine)

  1. Place wheel spindle (1) on a support (or floor) with the small end up.

  2. Lubricate the wheel bearings with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  3. Assemble brake group (6), wheel assembly (2), hub (3), and the wheel bearings on wheel spindle (1).

  4. Measure the thickness of bearing plate (5). Measure through the three evenly spaced small holes in bearing plate (5). Find the average value of the three measurements and record the results.

  5. Install bearing plate (5) without shims (7).

  6. Apply lubricating oil to the threads of five bolts (4). Install five bolts (4) evenly spaced.

  7. Tighten five bolts (4) to a torque of 112 ± 18 N·m (83 ± 13 lb ft).

  8. Rotate the wheel for one revolution.

  9. Tighten five bolts (4) again to a torque of 112 ± 18 N·m (83 ± 13 lb ft).

  10. Loosen five bolts (4). Rotate the wheel for one revolution to seat the bearings.

  11. Tighten five bolts (4) to a torque of 50 ± 9 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft).

  12. Rotate the wheel for one revolution.

  13. Tighten five bolts (4) again to a torque of 50 ± 9 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft).

  14. Measure the distance from bearing plate (5) to the end of the spindle housing. Measure the distance through the three evenly spaced small holes in bearing plate (5). Find the average value of the three measurements.

  15. Determine the difference between the average thickness that was measure in Step 4 and the average depth that was measured in Step 14. The difference is the gap that is between the bearing plate and the end of the spindle housing.

  16. Add 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) to the gap that was determined in Step 15. This measurement is the thickness of shims (7).

  17. Measure the shim pack. The thickness of the shim pack must be within 0.025 mm (0.001 inch) of the thickness in Step 16.

  18. Remove bearing plate (5).

  19. Install shims (7).

  20. Install bearing plate (5) and ten bolts (4). Tighten ten bolts (4) evenly to a torque of 520 ± 70 N·m (385 ± 50 lb ft).
