Start By:

  1. Remove the brake (parking, service) accumulator.

------ WARNING! ------

Pressurized System!

Hydraulic accumulators contain gas and oil under high pressure. DO NOT disconnect lines or disassemble any component of a pressurized accumulator. All gas pre-charge must be removed from the accumulator as instructed by the service manual before servicing or disposing of the accumulator or any accumulator component.

Failure to follow the instructions and warnings could result in personal injury or death.

Only use dry nitrogen gas to recharge accumulators. See your Cat dealer for special equipment and detailed information for accumulator service and charging.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

  1. Discharge the nitrogen pressure from the accumulator. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS5464, "Accumulator Discharging and Charging Procedures" for the correct procedure to release the nitrogen from the accumulator.

  2. Clamp accumulator (1) to a suitable work bench and remove valve (5) by first removing the gas valve protector.

  3. Remove the labels that are at each end of the cylinder.

  4. Use Tooling (A) to remove end cap (3) and end cap (4).

Note: Tooling (A) requires three M12 bolts that are 31mm long

  5. Remove O-ring seal (7) and backup ring (6) from end cap (4). Remove O-ring seal (8) and backup ring (9) from end cap (3).

  6. Remove O-ring seal (10) and O-ring seal (11) from gas valve (5).

  7. Push piston assembly (2) out of accumulator (1) in the direction of the fluid side, as shown.

Note: The seals on piston assembly (2) are not serviceable. Replace piston assembly (2) as a unit.
