MID 082 - CID 2143 - FMI 09

Usage:

14L B94
Conditions Which Generate This Code:

The CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Implement ECM and the Implement ECM 3 that is conducted on the Cat Data Link circuit or the communication that is conducted over the SAE J1939 Data Link circuit.

The FMI 09 means that the Implement ECM is not receiving any communication from the Implement ECM 3 on the involved data link circuit.

When this diagnostic code is activated by the Implement ECM, a "companion" diagnostic code will be activated in order to indicate which data link system is involved. The companion diagnostic code that has been activated will be either of the following:

CID 0247 FMI 09 - SAE J1939 Data Link

CID 0248 FMI 09 - Cat Data Link

Determine which one of the companion diagnostic codes has been activated along with the CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code to indicate which data link system is involved.

When the CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code is cleared, the data link companion code will also clear.

The possible causes of the CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code are listed below:

  • An open or a poor connection in the data link circuit.

  • The Implement ECM 3 has failed. This is unlikely

  • The Implement ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

Note: A loss of system power to the Implement ECM 3 can cause the Implement ECM to activate this diagnostic code. Ensure that the Implement ECM 3 is powered up before proceeding with this procedure.

Note: Ensure that the CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.

Test Step 1. DETERMINE WHICH DATA LINK COMPANION CODE IS ACTIVE

  1. Check the list of active diagnostic codes in order to determine which of the following companion diagnostic codes is active: CID 0247 FMI 09 - SAE J1939 Data Link CID 0248 FMI 09 - Cat Data Link

Results:

  • OK. - The CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active indicating that the problem is in the Cat Data Link system. In order to perform the troubleshooting procedure for the Cat Data Link, proceed to Test Step 2.

  • OK. - The CID 0247 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active indicating that the problem is in the SAE J1939 Data Link system. In order to perform the troubleshooting procedure for the SAE J1939 Data Link, proceed to Test Step 4.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE CAT DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

Illustration 1g01243564
Cat Data Link connections

  1. Turn the key switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from the Implement ECM. Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from the Implement ECM 3.

  3. Inspect the harness connectors and clean all of the contacts of the harness connectors. Refer to the illustration above to check the Cat Data Link connection on each of the machine harness connectors. Ensure that the wires are secured in the connector, the contacts are clean, and the contacts are in good condition.

  4. At the disconnected harness connector J1 for the Implement ECM 3, connect a jumper wire between contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)).

  5. At the disconnected harness connector J1 for the Implement ECM, measure the resistance between contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) and contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)).

Expected Result:

The resistance measurement is less than 5Ω.

Results:

  • OK. - The resistance measurement is less than 5Ω. The Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness is not open. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NOT OK. - The resistance measurement is greater than 5Ω. There is an open or a bad connection in the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness.

Repair: A resistance measurement that is greater than 5Ω but less than 5kΩ could indicate that one of the wires or one of the connection points in the circuit is not open but is not a good connection.

Refer to the complete machine Electrical System Schematic. Locate and examine all of the machine harness connections that are involved in the data link circuit. Check each wire section from connector to connector for an open or a bad connection. Ensure that all connections are clean, secure and in good condition. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

  1. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the data link circuit.

  2. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and the clips for each connector are completely fastened.

  3. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  4. Operate the machine.

  5. Check the status of the CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

The CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code is not active.

Results:

  • OK. - The CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection or a short at one of the connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal operation.

    STOP

  • NOT OK. - The CID 2143 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.

Repair: Check the circuit again. Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool, if available, in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The wiggle test can detect momentary or intermittent shorts or opens in the machine wiring harness.

If the cause of the problem is not found, one of the ECM modules may have failed. The ECM that activated the diagnostic code may have failed.

Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM that activated the diagnostic code. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

Test Step 4. CHECK THE SAE J1939 DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

  4. At the disconnected harness connector J2 for the Implement ECM 3, connect a jumper wire between contact J2-67 (wire K900-YL(Yellow)) and contact J2-68 (wire K990-GN(Green)).

  5. At the disconnected harness connector J2 for the Implement ECM, measure the resistance between contact J2-67 (wire K900-YL(Yellow)) and contact J2-68 (wire K990-GN(Green)).
