Introduction

This Special Instruction provides information for the improved camshafts, rocker arms, and high-pressure oil pumps used on C27 and C32 Machine Engines.

C27 / C32 engine are defined as below:

1. C27 or C32 Engine with MEUI-A Injectors:

a. Engines built between 2005-2012 with MEUI-A injectors and/or engines built for legacy machines.

b. LRC (Lesser Regulated Country) engine: Current machines engine with emission rating equivalent to US EPA Tier 2 / 3 with MEUI-A Injectors.

2. C27 or C32 engine with MEUI-C Injectors: Current machine engine that meets US EPA Tier 4 Final.

Note: A factory engine build date will be required to understand appropriate changes for given engine. This date can be determined by entering engine serial number into Technical Marketing Information (TMI) web application.

Improved Rocker Arms

The new rocker arms have a radius roller.

The new rocker arms are direct replacement for former rocker arms. The new rocker arms are adaptable back to the first production on C27 and C32 Machine Engines.

The change is effective at the factory with engine build date of 01 March 2019.

The change is effective on Reman engines and long blocks built on or after 01 March 2019.

Note: Reman groups include adjusting screw and nut. The Reference New Assembly does not. Refer to Table 1 for a list of new and former Reman groups.

The lower pictures show the complete rocker arms for the same part numbers above.
(7) Oil paths

Former rocker arms included various improvements, the addition of an oil hole for the cam roller outer surface, shown in Illustrations 4.

Note: Rocker arm with oil holes will require increased pressure.

DLC pins on rocker arms can be reused on new camshafts as long as the camshaft lobes and rollers do not exhibit any signs of scuffing, pitting or skidding failure:

1. DLC pins do not undergo break in due to the DLC pins high material hardness (previous generation bronze pin rocker arms underwent break-in and needed to be paired with camshaft, limiting the reusability).

2. DLC pins can adapt to any camshaft surface new or reused and DLC pins low friction joint with roller prevents camshaft scuffing and skidding.

DLC pins on rocker arms can be reused on new or old camshafts as long as the camshaft lobes and rollers do not exhibit any signs of scuffing, pitting, or skidding. Tracking lines are acceptable and do not indicate camshaft failure and should not affect DLC pin reusability.

Progression of Rocker Arms Groups

Higher Pressure Oil Pumps

Different springs and retainers in the new oil pumps increase the overall system oil pressure. This change is required when rocker arms with the additional oil hole are used.

The new pumps are adaptable back to the first production on all C27 and C32 engines.

The existing oil pumps can be updated by replacing the oil pump or the by-pass setting may be changed by installing the spring and/or retainer.

Use the following information to modify or replace the existing pumps.

Existing oil supply and return hoses may need to be updated for applications that have a right-front oil filter location, refer to Table 7.

The D10T, the D11T, and the 993K do not require the oil supply and the return tubes to be updated.

Note: Refer to Illustrations 5 and 6 for a typical example of the new components and locations.

The change is effective on Reman engines built on or after 15 June 2013.

The change is effective at the factory with the engine serial number prefixes, by date, that are listed in Table 7.

Note: Table 7 provides effectivity for both the higher pressure oil pump and oil supply/return lines, when applicable.

Improved Camshafts

Exhaust and intake camshaft lobe profiles were improved by increasing the width of the lobes. This improvement provides a more uniform surface profile across width of the lobe.

Note: Some remanufactured camshafts with a former Reman part number may still utilize former design dimensions, and will not have a wider lobe. Improvements have already been introduced to achieve the same uniform profile as compared to new part numbers.
