Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside. |
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine. |
Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts. Moving fan blades and moving parts will throw or cut any object or tool that falls or is pushed into them. Make sure no one is working on, underneath or close to an engine that is running. Make sure the area is free of personnel. |
Injury to personnel can result if they are not in the operator's view. Allow only essential personnel near the machine, and make sure the personnel are in the operator's view when testing, to prevent injury. Make sure checks are done in an open area. |
To prevent injury or death, never work under a machine while a test is being performed. |
Note: The propel motor for each drum is equipped with a speed sensor. The following procedure can be used to test any of the sensors.
Required Tools | |||

Illustration 1 g03223138 - Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.
- Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.
- Use throttle control switch (3) in order to operate the engine in ECO mode or in low idle.
Note: Two things indicate when the engine is in ECO mode. First, "ECO" will appear on the display. Second, the second LED next to throttle control switch (3) will be illuminated. Two things indicate when the engine is at low idle. First, "Low Idle" will appear on the display. Second, the first LED next to the throttle control switch will be illuminated.
- Move engine start switch (4) to the OFF position.

8935 kg (19700 lb) . Place jack stands under the machine frame at designated location (5).Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g03223141 Right Rear Drum Shown Note: Both drums have speed sensors on the propel motors.
- Locate speed sensor connector (6) for the drum being tested. Do not disconnect the connector.
- Insert red spoon from Tool (B) into pin "3" or "4" of the connector. Insert black spoon from Tool (B) into pin "2" of the connector.
- Connect Tool (A) to Tool (B). Set Tool (A) to measure frequency.
- Move engine start switch (4) to the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.
- Operate the engine at low idle for a few minutes. Use throttle control switch (3) in order to operate the engine in high idle.
Note: Two things indicate when the engine is at high idle. First, "High Idle" will appear on the display. Second, all three LED's next to throttle control switch (3) will be illuminated.
- Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool (D). Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches
43 ± 5.6 °C (110 ± 10 °F) . - Move parking brake switch (2) to the OFF position.
- Use throttle control switch (3) in order to operate the engine in ECO mode.
Note: Two things indicate when the engine is in ECO mode. First, "ECO" will appear on the display. Second, the second LED next to throttle control switch (3) will be illuminated.
Show/hide tableIllustration 4 g03223156 - Use propel speed range control switch (7) in order to shift the propel motors into the LOW SPEED position.
Note: Two things indicate when the propel motors are in the LOW SPEED position. First, "Propel Mode Low" will appear on the display. Second, one LED next to propel speed range control switch (7) will be illuminated.
- Move propel lever (1) into the forward range.

Illustration 5 g03223159 - Determine drum rpm using Tool (C). Adjust drum rotation speed with speed control button (8), in order to obtain a drum rotation speed of approximately 20 30 rpm.
- Record frequency with Tool (A).
- Multiply drum rpm measured in Step 17 by 5. Compare this value to frequency measured by Tool (A). The values should match within 2 Hz.
- Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.
- Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.
- Move engine start switch (4) to the OFF position.
- If the speed sensor is not functioning properly or shows no signal, replace the speed sensor and retest. Go to Step 10. If the speed sensor is functioning properly, remove the tooling and lower the machine to the ground.
Note: The speed sensors can alternately be tested with the service tool software.
- Use a suitable lifting device in order to lift the machine off the jack stands. The weight of the machine is approximately
8935 kg (19700 lb) . Remove the jack stands and lower the machine to the ground.
