A burr has been discovered on the inboard thrust face of the No. 7 main bearing of some new and remanufactured crankshafts. See the illustration. The burr can be felt as a sharp edge at the outer diameter of the thrust face on the counterweight. This burr is caused by a factory shot-peening process. The burr does not cause structural damage. But it makes installation of the rear main thrust bearing difficult because the burr can scratch the bearing's thrust surfaces.

Location of possible burr on No. 7 (rear) main bearing thrust surfaces.

The burr should be removed before the crankshaft is installed in the engine. Use a file or small hand grinder to CAREFULLY remove the sharp edge. Avoid damaging the thrust face or main bearing journal surface when filing or grinding. Thoroughly clean the crankshaft before installation.
