Power from diesel engine (7) is sent from the flywheel to torque converter (6). Power from the output shaft of the torque converter is sent to torque converter updrive transfer gears (5) .
Power from the updrive transfer gears is sent through upper drive shaft (4) to the input shaft of transmission (2) .
The transmission output shaft is connected to output transfer gears (1) by splines. Power is sent from the output transfer gears through rear drive shaft (13) to rear differential (15). The output transfer gears also sends power to front differential (9) through center drive shaft (12), center bearing (11), and front drive shaft (10) .
The pinions, bevel gears, and gears of each differential turn the respective axles. The axles are connected to final drives (8) and (14). The final drives turn the wheels.

Six hydraulically activated clutches in the transmission provide four forward speeds and four reverse speeds. Speed selection and direction selection are made manually with transmission direction and speed control (19). The autoshift control will make speed selections if autoshift control switch (29) is in the automatic mode.
The power train electronic control system electronically controls transmission shifts. The power train electronic control system shifts the transmission. For shifting transmission to the desired speed and direction, Power Train Electronic Control Module (ECM) (24) receives input from transmission direction and speed control (19). The Power Train ECM signals the transmission clutch solenoid valve of the speed clutch that is selected. The Power Train ECM signals the transmission clutch solenoid valve of the direction clutch that is selected. The output signal energizes the transmission clutch solenoid valves (42) that are selected. The Power Train ECM can request automatic shifts. The Power Train ECM uses the input signal from transmission output speed sensor (43) to ensure steady engagement of the clutches.
The Power Train ECM controls the following functions: neutral start, manual shift, automatic shift, transmission neutralizer, parking brake, automatic parking brake, operator present, backup alarm and ride control.
The Power Train ECM also controls some of the remote control function.
