Usage:
Changing a Personality Module either to update the engine or to change the rating will often bring new parameters or parameter options not previously available to the engine. This applies whether the Personality Module is updated using Flash Programming or changing the Personality Module chip. When the new module is in the ECM, the new parameters will be set at their default values. Default values are usually set so the feature is OFF (unused). Some new parameters may require wiring changes before they can be effective.
NOTE: For ECM's with Serial No. ending in "CG" or "CJ" the Personality Module must be JUN95 or later to ensure proper engine operation.
Procedure for Changing a Personality Module
The following information should be noted when changing a Personality Module.
- - Review any Snapshots before updating. Snapshots will be cleared when the new Personality Module is installed.
- - If replacing the Personality Module by replacing the Personality Module chip, ask the owner/operator if they want the trip data recorded before updating the Personality Module. Disconnecting the ECM Vehicle Harness J1/P1 will result in loss of trip data.
- - When the Personality Module is updated from a Personality Module earlier than APR94 to one APR94 or later will cause the trip data to appear scrambled when viewed with the new Personality Module installed.
- - NOTE: After replacing the Personality Module, reset the Trip information before releasing the vehicle to avoid unnecessary confusion at a later date when someone attempts to view the information.
- - An ECM with a Serial No. ending in "CG" or "CJ" requires a Personality Module Release Date of JUN95 or later to ensure proper engine operation. Also, these ECM's do not have removable Personality Modules. Changing a Personality Module requires Flash Programming.
- - If replacing the Personality Module by replacing the Personality Module chip, ask the owner/operator if they want the trip data recorded before updating the Personality Module. Disconnecting the ECM Vehicle Harness J1/P1 will result in loss of trip data.
1. Before changing the Personality Module consider the following:
2. Check and clear any 244-02 Event Recorder Lost (02) diagnostic event codes. It is not unusual to generate this code after changing a Personality Module. This code will be caused when the Personality Module is updated as described above, or when a new ECM has its first Personality Module installed (using Flash or a chip).
