Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Use Tooling (C) in order to install bushing (9) and lip seal (8). Repeat this step for the other side.

    Note: Do not apply any lubricant to the inside diameter of lip seal (8) or bushing (9).

  2. Attach a suitable lifting device to both sides of front drive and steering axle (4). The weight of front drive and steering axle (4) is approximately 408 kg (900 lb). Use the suitable lifting device in order to position front drive and steering axle (4) to the machine.

  3. Position washers (6) and thrust washers (7) to both sides of front drive and steering axle (4) while you are installing pin assembly (5).

    Note: Use the required amount of washers (6) on the front side of front drive and steering axle (4) in order to maintain a gap of 0.8 mm (0.03 inch) maximum.

    Note: Do not apply any lubricant to pin assembly (5).

    Note: The flange of pin assembly (5) must be rotated downward before installation in order to clear the frame.

  4. Install bolt (3).

  5. Connect hose assembly (2). Repeat for the opposite side of the machine.

  6. Install the counterweight. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Counterweight - Remove and Install".

  7. Install the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Front) - Remove and Install".

  8. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove Tooling (A) under the front of the machine.

  9. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove Tooling (A) from the rear of the machine.

  10. Remove lift cylinder brace (1) and lower the bucket.

End By:

  1. Install the front drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Front) - Remove and Install".
