Each propel motor drives a drum through a single speed planetary final drive. The front final drive assembly has a gear reduction of 36.3:1. The rear final drive assembly has a gear reduction of 47:1. The final drive assembly contains two planetary gear assemblies.
Components inside the planetary final drive are splash lubricated. The housing serves as the oil reservoir.
When the machine is moving, the output shaft of the propel motor turns the first stage sun gear. In the first stage planetary, the sun gear is driven and the ring gear is held. Therefore, interaction between the first stage sun gear and the first stage planet gears cause the first stage planet carrier to rotate. The first stage planet carrier is connected to the second stage sun gear.
In the second stage planetary, the sun gear is driven and the planet carrier is held. Under these conditions, the planet gears cause the second stage ring gear to rotate. The second stage ring gear is connected to the hub. The hub transfers power to the drum.
