CB54 and CB64 Asphalt Compactors Machine Electronic Control System Caterpillar

Event Code List

Usage:

CB-64 CB5
Event codes alert the operator or the technician that an abnormal operating condition exists in one of the machine systems.

When the ECM activates an event code, the operator or the technician will be alerted. Most active events will be logged by the ECM. Some events are not logged to the ECM. The active events and the logged events can be viewed with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET).

Warning Levels

The ECM will assign one of the three warning levels to an active event code according to the severity of the abnormal system condition. Each warning level requires a specific response from the operator. The warning levels and required operator response are listed below.

Warning Level 1

Warning level 1 alerts the operator that a machine system requires attention. The operator should check the involved system. Perform any necessary maintenance to the system at the earliest possible time.

Warning Level 2

Warning level 2 requires changing the operation of the machine or performing a maintenance procedure. Failure to correct the problem that caused this warning may result in damage to the involved components. The problem that caused the event may require a correction before the machine may resume operation.

Warning Level 3

Warning level 3 requires an immediate safe shutdown of the machine in order to avoid damage to the machine or injury to personnel around the machine. The problem that caused the event must be corrected before machine operation can resume.

Table 1
WARNING OPERATION
Warning Level     (Warning Indications)     "Operator Action Required"     (Possible Result)  (1)
"Action Lamp Status" "Action Alarm Status"
1     Steady ON     OFF     No immediate action is required. The system needs attention soon.     No damage will occur to the machine. Minor reductions in machine performance may occur.
2     Intermittent ON     OFF     Change machine operation or perform maintenance to the system.     Severe damage to components can occur.
3     Intermittent ON     Intermittent ON     Immediately perform a safe engine shutdown.     Injury to the operator or severe damage to components can occur.
( 1 ) This is the possible result, if the operator takes no action.

Cat ET

When an abnormal operating condition occurs, the status screen on the Cat ET indicates that there is an active event.

Event codes are displayed on Cat ET in the following format:

EXXXX Description of the code

The "E" means that the code is an event code. The "XXXX" is a numeric identifier. The numeric identifier is followed by a description of the code.

Active event codes are listed in ascending numerical order. The code with the lowest number is listed first. The active event code is removed from the list when the condition is no longer present.

Logged Event Codes

Some event codes are logged in the ECM memory. Some event codes are active only. The logged event codes are listed in chronological order. The most recent code is listed first.

A logged code is cleared from memory when one of the following conditions occur:

  • The service technician manually clears the code.

  • The code does not reoccur for 1000 hours.

  • A new code is logged and there are already ten logged codes in memory. In this case, the oldest logged code is cleared.

Note: Always clear logged event codes after investigating and correcting the problem which generated the code.

Troubleshooting

Perform the following steps in order to troubleshoot an event:

  1. Obtain the following information from the operator:

    • The event and the time of the event

    • Determine the engine's operating conditions at the time of the event. Conditions such as engine RPM and load may be important.

    • Determine if there are any systems that were installed by the dealer or by the customer that could cause the event.

  1. Some of the events below can become active during normal system operation. Verify that the event is not due to error of the operator.

  1. Check all fluid levels and all oil levels.

  1. Troubleshoot and repair any active diagnostic codes.

ECM Event Code List

The following table lists the event codes that apply to the control system. The recommended response is listed. Use the Cat ET service tool in order to determine the event codes that are active or logged.

Table 2
Event Codes
EID     Level     Description     Machine Response/Possible Cause
E179     1     Alternator Not Charging     Frequency <72 Hz at Engine low idle (600 RPM)
Frequency <280.8 Hz at Engine high idle (2340 RPM)
E265     3     User Defined Shutdown     The engine shutdown switch  (1) is in the STOP position.
(switch is accessible from ground level on front LH side of the machine)
E283     3     Low Hydraulic Charge Pressure     "Low Hydraulic Oil Pressure" warning lamp will be ON.
Action Lamp will be ON.
Alarm will sound.
Engine operation is not affected.
E455     1     Hydraulic Pilot Supply Filter Plugged     Sending unit on the main hydraulic filter has been bypassed.
E575     3     Unexpected Drive Motor Forward Speed Detected     Machine is immediately stopped, propel and vibe systems are disabled. Engine continues to run.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Machine Movement Without Request".
E576     3     Unexpected Drive Motor Rearward Speed Detected     Machine is immediately stopped, propel and vibe systems are disabled. Engine continues to run.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Machine Movement Without Request".
E600     3     High Hydraulic Oil Temperature Warning     "High Hydraulic Oil Temperature" warning lamp will be ON.
Action Lamp will be ON.
Alarm will sound.
ECM will reset the code when Hydraulic Oil Temp falls below 92° ± 2.8°C (197.6° ± 5.0°F) for 4 seconds.
Engine operation is not affected.
E640     1     Water Spray Activation Time Exceeded     Activated when the button has been activated for 200 mS.
E695     3     Unexpected Motor Speed Detection Disabled     Operator is warned of condition, machine will continue to function
A fault in the propel pump swashplate angle sensor will activate this event.
E696     3     Opposite Machine Movement Commands Disabled     Operator is warned of condition, machine may continue to drive
A short to ground or an open circuit on a propel solenoid this will activate this event when traveling in the opposite direction.
E861     1     Clock Manual Alignment Required     Master ECM clock differs from other ECM clocks.
Clock synchronization is made through Cat ET
E2074     2     Engine Shutdown Due to Diagnostic     Park Brake Solenoid is Shorted to battery.
No other way to stop the machine.
