Event Code List

Usage:

256C DWS
Event codes alert the operator that an abnormal Machine ECM condition has occurred.

When the ECM activates an event code, the operator will be alerted by the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The active event will be logged by the ECM. Event codes can be viewed with the Caterpillar Monitoring System or Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool.

Warning Levels

The ECM will assign one of three warnings levels to an active event code according to the severity of the abnormal system condition. Each warning level requires a specific response from the operator. The warning levels and required operator response are listed below.

Level 1

Warning level 1 alerts the operator that a machine system requires attention. The operator should check that the involved system condition or the operator should perform maintenance on the involved system at the earliest possible time.

Level 2

Warning level 2 requires a change in the operation of the machine or the performance of a maintenance procedure. Failure to correct the problem that may result in damage to the machine components.

Level 3

Warning level 3 requires an immediate safe shutdown of the machine to avoid damage to the machine or injury to personnel around the machine. The problem that caused the event must be corrected before machine operation can resume.

Indications and System Response

Caterpillar Monitoring System

The monitoring system will alert the operator when an event code is active. Event codes are activated in one of three warning levels according to the severity of the condition. The response of the monitoring system to these warning levels is shown in the following table.

Electronic Technician Service Tool

When an abnormal power train operating condition occurs, the status screen on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT® ET) indicates that there is an active event.

Event codes are displayed on CAT® ET in the following format:

EXXXX Description of the code

The "E" means that the code is an event code. The "XXXX" is a numeric identifier. The numeric identifier is followed by a description of the code.

Active event codes are listed in ascending numerical order. The code with the lowest number is listed first. The active event code is removed from the list when the condition is no longer present.

Logged Event Codes

Every event code is logged in the ECM memory. Logged event codes are listed in chronological order. The most recent code is listed first.

A logged code is cleared from memory when one of the following conditions occur:

  • The service technician manually clears the code.

  • A new code is logged and there are already 20 logged codes in memory. In this case, the oldest logged code is cleared.

Note: Always clear logged event codes after investigating and correcting the problem which generated the code.

Troubleshooting

Perform the following steps in order to troubleshoot an event:

  1. Obtain the following information from the operator:

    • The event and the time of the event

    • Determine the engine operating conditions at the time of the event. Conditions such as engine RPM and load may be important.

    • Determine if there are any systems that were installed by the dealer or by the customer that could cause the event.

  1. Verify that the event is not due to normal machine operation. Verify that the event is not due to error of the operator.

  1. Check all fluid levels and all oil levels.

  1. Troubleshoot and repair any active diagnostic codes.

Event Code List

The following table lists the event codes that apply to the Machine ECM. The recommended operator response is listed. Use the Cat ET service tool in order to determine the event codes that are active or logged.

E179 (1)   Alternator Not Charging

Activates when the engine is running and the frequency at the R terminal of the alternator is not detected by the ECM.

Deactivates when frequency at the R terminal of the alternator is detected.

Alternator / battery output indicator located on the left side instrument cluster turns red.  
Check the amperage and voltage output at the alternator. Possible causes are::
· Loose or missing alternator belt
· Loose/corroded alternator / battery cables and ground connections
· Loose/corroded ground connections (alternator, battery cables)
· Damaged alternator or failed batteries. Note: Dirt/dust in alternator can cause failure.

Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" and Testing and Adjusting, "Alternator - Test" in KENR6940 or RENR7578.  
E272 (1)   Inlet Air Restriction Warning

Activates when the engine has run for > 1 minute and the N/O air cleaner indicator switch closes.

Deactivates when the N/O air filter switch returns to the open state (with engine running).
Specification for the air cleaner indicator switch to close is 7.5 kPa (1.09 psi) or 30.11 inches of H2O. (Spec tolerance is ± 5% at 23° C (73° F)).  
· Check the engine air cleaner inlet and ducting. Ensure that the passageway is not blocked or collapsed.
· Inspect the engine air cleaner element. Replace if needed.

E360 (2)   Low Engine Oil Pressure

Activates when the engine runs for > 10 seconds and the N/O engine oil pressure switch becomes closed to ground for > 3 seconds.

Deactivates when the N/C engine oil switch returns to be closed position for 1 second (with engine running).  
· Check the engine oil level.

To troubleshoot, refer to The engine has low oil pressure in Testing and Adjusting, KENR5119, "Troubleshooting".  
E360 (3)   Low Engine Oil Pressure

Activates when the engine runs for > 10 seconds and the N/O engine oil pressure switch becomes closed to ground for > 5.5 seconds.

Deactivates when the N/C engine oil switch returns to be closed position for 1 second (with engine running).

The engine indicator located on the left side instrument cluster turns red and an audible alert will sound.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.

· Check the engine oil level.

To troubleshoot, refer to The engine has low oil pressure in Testing and Adjusting, KENR5119, "Troubleshooting".
Note: At low idle and when the engine has reached operating temperature, the engine oil pressure should be approximately 100 kPa (14.5 psi).  
E361 (2)   High Engine Coolant Temperature

Activates when the ECM detects the engine coolant temperature to be > 110° C (230° F).

Deactivates when the engine coolant temperature is < 110° C (230° F).

The engine indicator, located on the left side instrument cluster turns red and an audible alert will sound.  
· Reduce load and allow engine to cool.

To troubleshoot, refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR6940, "Cooling System - Check - Overheating"  
E391 (3)   Inlet Air Restriction

Activates when the engine has run for > 1 minute and the N/O air cleaner indicator switch closes.

Deactivates when the N/O air filter switch returns to the open state (with engine running).
Specification for the air cleaner indicator switch to close is 7.5 kPa (1.09 psi) or 30.11 inches of H2O. - Spec tolerance is ± 5% at 23° C (73° F).

The engine indicator located on the left side instrument cluster turns amber.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.

E568 (2)   Unexpected Left Motor Forward Speed Detected   These events indicate that unexpected motor speed in the indicated direction has been detected. The direction of the wheels/tracks has moved faster or slower than expected.
Ensure that the latest available machine flash file is installed.

Probable Causes
· Pump stuck at maximum displacement - Motor speed will stick in max turtle gear ratio
· Motor stuck at minimum displacement - Speed will be stuck in rabbit gear ratio (two-speed machines only)
· Intermittent diagnostic for a motor speed sensor
· Active diagnostic code for the hydraulic temperature sensor

E569 (2)   Unexpected Left Motor Reverse Speed Detected  
E570 (2)   Unexpected Right Motor Forward Speed Detected  
E571 (2)   Unexpected Right Motor Reverse Speed Detected  
E695 (3)   Unexpected Motor Speed Detection Disabled

Active event only (will not be logged).
This event designates the unexpected motor speed detection control has been disabled due to a motor speed sensor circuit diagnostic fault. A diagnostic code for a motor speed sensor circuit includes the motor speed signals and 8V power supply. This event will only be active when the hystat transmission lever is in forward or reverse and the mentioned diagnostic codes are active..
The active event will be cleared when the responsible diagnostic codes are cleared and the hystat transmission lever is returned to neutral.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.

Motor speed or 8V Power Supply diagnostic codes are active.

Reference the appropriate troubleshooting procedures for these CID diagnostic codes:
CID 41 = 8 VDC Supply
CID 2685 = Left Drive Motor Speed Sensor #1
CID 2686 = Left Drive Motor Speed Sensor #2
CID 2687 = Right Drive Motor Speed Sensor #1
CID 2688 = Right Drive Motor Speed Sensor #2
 
E696 (3)   Opposite Machine Movement Commands Disabled

Active only (will not be logged). The event designates the machine will be unable to move in the opposite direction of travel.

Example: If machine moves in the forward direction and a reverse pump solenoid has an open circuit diagnostic code. The machine will be unable to move in the opposite direction, and the event will be active.

This event will remain active until the diagnostic code has been cleared and the hystat transmission lever has been brought to the neutral position.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.
This event will be active for FMI 5 (Current Below Normal ) and FMI 6 (Current Above Normal ) pump solenoids codes.

Reference the appropriate troubleshooting procedures for these CID diagnostic codes:
CID 1703 = Left Drive Pump Forward Control Solenoid
CID 1704 = Left Drive Pump Reverse Control Solenoid
CID 1705 = Right Drive Pump Forward Control Solenoid
CID 1706 = Right Drive Pump Reverse Control Solenoid  
E875 (1)   Low System Voltage

Activates when the engine is Not running and battery voltage is < 9 VDC for 15 seconds. Deactivates when battery voltage is > 10 VDC for 2 seconds.
Also Activates when the engine is running and battery voltage is < 12.25 VDC for 30 seconds.

Deactivates when battery voltage is > 13.0 VDC for 2 seconds.

Note: All battery voltages are relative to what the ECM detects. Actual voltage measurements may be slightly lower at the battery terminal or at the ECM pins.  
If the level 2 event remains active for more than 5 minutes or is repeatedly activated, shutdown operation at the earliest opportunity.

Troubleshoot the charging system. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" and Testing and Adjusting, "Alternator - Test" in KENR6940 or RENR7578.  
E875 (2)   Low System Voltage

Activates when the engine is running and battery voltage is < 12.0 VDC for 30 seconds.

Deactivates when battery voltage is > 12.25 VDC for 2 seconds.

There is an increased charging system problem. Battery voltage is becoming too low for continued operation.  
If the level 2 event remains active for more than 5 minutes or is repeatedly activated, shutdown operation at the earliest opportunity.

Troubleshoot the charging system. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" and Testing and Adjusting, "Alternator - Test" in KENR6940 or RENR7578.  
E875 (3)   Low System Voltage

Activates when the engine is running for at least 1 minute and battery voltage is < 11.5 VDC for 10 seconds.

Deactivates when battery voltage is > 11.75 VDC for 2 seconds.

Voltage level is too low for continued safe operation.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.

Troubleshoot the charging system. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" and Testing and Adjusting, "Alternator - Test" in KENR6940 or RENR7578.  
E876 (2)   High System Voltage

Activates when the engine has run for at least 2 minutes with a battery voltage > 14.75 VDC for 10 seconds.

Deactivates when battery voltage is < 14.75 VDC for 2 seconds.  
If the level 2 event remains active for more than 5 minutes or is repeatedly activated, shutdown operation at the earliest opportunity.
High voltage problem possibly due to a regulator or alternator starting to fail. Troubleshoot the charging system.

Troubleshoot the charging system. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" and Testing and Adjusting, "Alternator - Test" in KENR6940 or RENR7578.  
E876 (3)   High System Voltage

Activates when the engine has run for at least 1 minute with a battery voltage > 16 VDC for 10 seconds.

Deactivates when battery voltage is < 15.75 VDC for 2 seconds.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.

Voltage level is too high for continued safe operation. The machine should be safely shut down.

Troubleshoot the charging system. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" and Testing and Adjusting, "Alternator - Test" in KENR6940 or RENR7578.  
E878 (2)   High Hydraulic Oil Temperature

Activates when hydraulic oil temp > 90° C (194° F) for 3 seconds.

Deactivates when hydraulic oil temp < 90 °C (194 °F).  
· Modify machine operation to reduce system load.
· Check oil level.
· Check hydraulic oil cooling system. Clean the hydraulic oil cooler, if needed.
To troubleshoot the hydraulic system, refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR5113, "Hydraulic System Troubleshooting"  
E878 (3)   High Hydraulic Oil Temperature

Activates when hydraulic oil temp > 93 °C (199 °F) for 3 seconds.

Deactivates when hydraulic oil temp < 93 °C (199 °F).

The hydraulic indicator located on the left side instrument cluster turns red and an audible alert will sound.  
Immediate Safe Shutdown Required.

· Stop machine operation and allow to cool.
· Check oil level.
· Check hydraulic oil cooling system. Clean the hydraulic oil cooler, if needed.

To troubleshoot the hydraulic system, refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR5113, "Hydraulic System Troubleshooting"  
E879 (1)   Hydraulic Tank Oil Filter Plugged

Activates when the hydraulic oil temperature > 35° C (95° F), engine runs (key-on) for > 10 seconds and the N/O hydraulic filter bypass switch closes (for 10 sec) at rated 276 kPa (40.0 psi).

Deactivates when filter bypass switch returns to N/O state at rated 276 kPa (40.0 psi) or the hydraulic oil temperature drops to < 35° C (95° F).

The hydraulic indicator located on the left side instrument cluster turns amber.  
The hydraulic return oil bypasses the filter.
· Stop the machine and replace the oil filter.
· Inspect the filter for foreign material.
