Description of Change: Relocating the grease fitting improves the service life of the center drive shaft.

Adaptable To: The grease fitting in the 162-3115 Shaft As has been relocated. The relocation of the grease fitting is effective with 8XZ407-UP. The relocation of the grease fitting in the 162-3115 Shaft As is adaptable to 8XZ1-406 by using the following procedure.

Note: Performing these modifications to the 162-3115 Shaft As will convert it into a 9EQ7258 Shaft As. The 9EQ7258 Shaft As is a part of the 9EQ7260 Slip Joint Gp. Refer to Service Magazine, "An Improved Slip Joint is Now Used" in this issue.

1. Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR4661 (9EP5391), "R1700G LHD Power Train", "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install".

Note: Place alignment marks across the slip joint assembly for correct alignment at assembly.

2. Remove 8V-1540 Spider and Bearing Gp (1) .

3. Remove 2G-4563 Seal Kit (3). Separate tube (A) from shaft (B). Discard 2G-4563 Seal Kit (3) .

4. Remove 3B-8489 Grease Fitting (2) .

5. Thoroughly clean tube (A) and shaft (B) .

6. Weld plug (5) in position. Refer to Table 2 for the welding details.

7. Install 2G-4563 Seal Kit (3) on shaft (B) .

8. Align the marks and install shaft (B) into tube (A) .

9. Install 8C-8771 Pressure Relief Fitting (8) .

10. Install 8V-1540 Spider and Bearing Gp (1). Refer to Specifications, RENR4659 (9EP5389), "R1700G LHD Power Train", "Drive Shafts".

11. Install 5M-6214 Pipe Plug (6) .

12. Install 3B-8489 Grease Fitting (7) .

13. Install the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR4661 (9EP5391), "R1700G LHD Power Train", "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install".

14. Lubricate the center drive shaft. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7323 (9EP5408), "R1700G LHD", "Drive Shaft Universal Joints, Splines, and Bearings - Lubricate".
