Introduction
This instruction applies to all Articulated Trucks that are using the following parts: 120-4932 Service Brake Gp , 8R-1257 Service Brake Gp , 120-4931 Service Brake Gp , 8R-1286 Lined Shoe Assembly , 8R-1931 Lined Shoe Assembly , 8R-1284 Lining Kit , 8R-1933 Lining and Spring Kit , 0R-2947 Lined Shoe Assembly , 8R-1928 Service Brake Gp , 8R-1930 Lined Shoe Assembly , 8R-1932 Lining Kit and 0R-2948 Lined Shoe Assembly
This instruction applies to all Wheel Tractor-Scrapers.
Whenever a new brake lining is installed, the linings require conditioning. The conditioning will ensure maximum braking effectiveness and compliance with ISO standards and SAE recommended practices.
After the brakes have been conditioned, the brakes do not need to be conditioned again in the usable life of the brakes. This procedure requires five hours or six hours for completion. This includes cool down time between conditioning. When the linings and shoe assemblies are replaced, the full conditioning procedure must be repeated.
Installation
In order to condition the brake linings, the brake linings are repeatedly heated and cooled to a specified temperature.
Understand the following procedure to condition the brake lining before starting the installation of the new parts.
- Install the new parts and adjust the new parts correctly. Refer to the service manual for your machine for the correct installation and adjustment procedures.
Note: Make sure that the initial adjustment of the brakes is correct before proceeding.
- Deactivate the brakes on the third axle of the 6 X 4 Articulated Trucks.
- Choose an area that is clear in order to condition the brakes.
Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your authorized dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. |
- Engage the service brake. Drive the machine in first gear. Use the service brake to cause the engine speed to be 50 rpm below the maximum rpm.
- Periodically measure the temperature of the brake drum at the location that is indicated in figure 1 or figure 2. Use a 164-3310 Infrared Thermometer to measure the temperature of the brake drum. The first check should be made after approximately two to four minutes. Check all of the drums because the temperatures may vary.
Note: Due to different amounts of surface contact, the drum temperatures will not rise at the same rate. The drum with the highest temperature must set the temperature limit.

- Continue conditioning the brake drums until a temperature of 250° ± 10°C (482° ± 18°F) is achieved. Do not exceed 270 °C (518 °F).
Note: Temperatures in excess of 270 °C (518 °F) will result in reduced wear life of the lining.
Note: The brakes will smoke heavily during the conditioning process. This is normal, as resins and shipping preservatives on the linings react against the hot brake components.
- After any of the temperatures of the brake drums rise to 250° ± 10°C (482° ± 18°F), allow the drums to cool to 100 °C (212 °F).
- Repeat step 4 through step 7 two more times.
- Reactivate the brakes on the third axle of the 6 X 4 Articulated Trucks.
