Introduction

The water system distributes water to the tires in order to prevent material from sticking to the tires. The water spray system is pressurized.

The water spray system is divided into segments. The first segment contains a drawing of the layout of the machine. This segment provides a general overview of the water spray system.

The next four segments show the location of all components on the machine which are part of the water spray system. A brief discussion of each component is provided in these segments.

The last section explains the operation of the water spray system. Hydraulic schematics and electrical schematics are used in this segment to trace current through the electrical system and water flow through the water system.

Location of Components

The following components are part of the water spray system:

  • Fuse (1) for the water spray system

  • Water spray controls (2)

  • Relays and timer (3)

  • Neutral start switch (4)

  • Water tank (5)

  • Motor and pump group (6) for the water spray system

  • Spray bar (front) (7)

  • Spray bar (rear) (8)

Electrical Components

Fuse (1) for the water spray system is located on the instrument panel. This fuse receives power when the main power relay is energized. The fuse distributes power to the contact 30 of the number three neutral start relay and to contact 5 of the water spray switch.

Illustration 4g01114828

The intermittent potentiometers (9) and (10) for the water spray and water spray switch (11) are located on the right console.

The water spray switch is a toggle switch with three positions. The front position is CONTINUOUS. The center position is OFF. The rear position is INTERMITTENT. When the water spray switch is in the CONTINUOUS position, the water spray system continuously operates.

When the switch is in the INTERMITTENT position, the water spray system is on for a period of time and off for a period of time. Also, when the water spray switch is in the INTERMITTENT position, the water spray system will not operate when the propulsion lever is moved into the NEUTRAL position.

Contact 5 of the water spray switch receives power from the water spray fuse. Contact 2 of the switch receives power when the coil of the number three neutral start relay is energized.

During the INTERMITTENT operation, the two intermittent potentiometers for water spray control the amount of operating time. The intermittent potentiometer (11) controls the operating time of the spray system. Potentiometer (9) controls the delay of the spray system. The intermittent potentiometers operate independently. Both potentiometers provide an input signal to the water spray timer.

The number three neutral start relay (12) and water spray relay (13) are located inside the right console. The cover of the right console must be removed for access to these components.

The neutral start switch controls the number three neutral start relay. This relay is energized when the propulsion lever is in NEUTRAL. When this relay is energized, and the water spray switch is in INTERMITTENT, the water spray system will not operate.

The water spray timer controls the water spray relay. When this relay is energized, the water spray system is ON. In order for this relay to be energized, the water spray switch must be in INTERMITTENT, and the system must be in the ON cycle. These relays work in conjunction with the water spray switch and the water spray timer in order to control the water spray system only when the system is in INTERMITTENT.

The water spray timer (14) is located inside the right console. The cover of the right console must be removed for access to this component.

The water spray timer controls the cycle when the water spray switch is in INTERMITTENT. The intermittent potentiometers provide input to the water spray timer. The water spray timer controls the coil of the water spray relay.

Neutral start switch (4) is located on the propulsion pump. The engine compartment cover provides access to this component.

The neutral start switch is closed when the propulsion lever is in the NEUTRAL position. The neutral start switch is open when the propulsion lever is in the FORWARD position. The neutral start switch is also open when the propulsion is in the REVERSE position.

In the water spray system, the neutral start switch controls the number three neutral start relay. When this switch is closed, the coil of the number three neutral start relay is energized.

The motor and the pump group is mounted to the inside of the machine frame behind the front wheels on the right side of the machine.

The motor and the pump group consists of an electric motor (15) which drives a pump (16). The pump draws water from the machine's water tank through a water filter (19). The pump supplies water to the front and rear spray bars.

The pump contains an internal pressure switch. If the pressure in the system exceeds 290 kPa (42 psi), the switch opens. In this case, electrical power to the motor is discontinued. When the pressure in the system decreases to 200 kPa (29 psi), the switch closes. In this case, electrical power is delivered to the motor.

The water lines contain a drain valve (17) and a shutoff valve (18). The drain valve can be opened until water flows from the valve. This can occur if the water spray system will not prime during pump operation. Once water flows from the drain valve, the valve can be closed in order to force the water to flow to the spray bars.

Water Tank

Illustration 9g01114836

Water tank (5) is located at the front of the machine. Fill port (20) for the water tank is on the left side of the tank. Sight gauge (21) indicates the amount of water in the tank.

Water Spray Bar

Illustration 10g01114839

The machine is equipped with a water spray bar at the front (7) and a water spray bar at the rear. The water supply line delivers water from the tank to the water spray bar.

Electrical System for Water Spray

Illustration 11g01114842

The 112-PU wire transfers power from the main power relay to the water spray fuse. The water spray fuse distributes power to contact 30 of the number three neutral start relay and to contact 5 of the water spray switch.

When the water spray switch is in the OFF position, power cannot be transferred to the motor.

When the water spray switch is in the CONTINUOUS position, contacts 4 and 5 of the switch are closed. In this situation, power transfers through the C922-BR wire to the motor. Current is conducted through the motor, and the motor operates.

When the water spray switch is in the INTERMITTENT position, contacts 2 and 3 of the water spray switch are closed. The condition of the number three neutral start relay and the condition of the water spray relay will determine if the motor will operate. This will occur when the system is in INTERMITTENT.

The number three neutral start relay is controlled by the neutral start switch. When the neutral start switch is closed, the coil of the number three neutral start relay is energized. This situation prevents power from reaching contact 2 of the water spray switch and from reaching contact 30 of the water spray relay. Under these conditions, the motor will not operate.

When the neutral start switch is open, the coil of the number three neutral start relay is de-energized. Power transfers across contact 30 to contact 87a of the relay. The C904-GN wire transfers power from contact 87a of the number three neutral start relay to contact 30 of the water spray relay and to contact 2 of the water spray switch.

When the water spray switch is in the INTERMITTENT position, power transfers into the F874-PK wire. This wire transfers power to contact 2 of the water spray timer, and the timer becomes active. The timer is controlled by two intermittent potentiometers. One of the potentiometers controls the duration of the ON cycle of the timer. The other potentiometer controls the duration of the OFF cycle.

During the ON cycle of the water spray timer, the timer generates a signal at contact 1. The F875-PU wire transfers this signal to the coil of the water spray relay. When the coil of this relay is energized, power transfers from the C904-GN wire into the C922-BR wire. The C922-BR wire transfers power to the motor. Current is conducted through the motor, and the motor operates.

When the water spray timer is in the OFF cycle, the coil of the water spray relay is de-energized, and no power is transferred to the motor.

Water Spray Hydraulic System

Illustration 12g01114844

A 24 volt electric motor drives the water pump. The water pump draws water from the tank through a filter. The front and rear spray bars have a spray nozzle for each tire. If the pressure in the system increases above 290 kPa (42 psi), the pressure switch opens, and the motor stops turning the pump.
