Reports have been received about problems with the fuel inlet screens for the fuel inlet ports on the fuel injectors. To improve reliability, Cat Reman has removed the fuel inlet screens from all remanufactured fuel injectors for 3500 Engines.

Extensive field tests were performed on the fuel injectors without the screens. No significant difference in the wear of the fuel injectors was found in comparison to fuel injectors with screens.

Typical example of a fuel inlet port on the case of a fuel injector

A washer is installed in place of the fuel inlet screen. Installation of the washer depends on the geometry of the case and on the previous method of screen installation.

The washers are roll formed onto new cases and onto cases that had staked screens.

The washers are welded onto the cases that had welded screens. The geometry of these cases do not have sufficient material for roll forming.

For Electronic Unit Injectors (EUI), serial number 195245 has welded washers. Serial number 198960 has washers that are roll formed.

For Mechanical Unit Injectors (MUI), serial number 124341 has washers that are roll formed.

The part numbers of the modified fuel injectors are listed in Table 1.

( 1 ) The fuel inlet ports for this fuel injector are modified by two different methods. Some of the cases have fuel inlet ports with a diameter of 2.8 mm (0.11 inch). The remainder of the cases have washers that are roll formed. None of these fuel injectors have welded washers.
