Usage:
Introduction
This instruction provides information and parts necessary to uprate various 3176B Truck Engines (9CK1-Up) without iron changes.
The 275 hp engine may be uprated to 300 hp. The 325 hp engine may be uprated to 350 hp. The 350 hp engine may be uprated to 365 hp. In addition, the 325 hp engine, effective with serial number 9CK18309, may be uprated to 365 hp.
NOTE: This uprate may require changes to certain truck models. These changes may include increasing the capacity of the cooling, charge air core, drive train, and/or exhaust systems. Assistance of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) will likely be required to identify required changes.
Failure to implement the required changes may result in problems with performance, fuel economy, overheating, and/or engine failure. These infractions may result in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) civil penalties.
Parts Description List
Personality Module
1. Install the correct personality module (PM) for the desired uprate. Refer to the Parts Description List for the correct "Flash File #" if flash programming or "Service PM #" if replacing PM.
2. Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Service Tool (Electronic Control Analyzer And Programmer [ECAP] or Caterpillar Electronic Techman [ET]).
3. Connect the ECM electronic power by turning the key switch to ON.
4. Change the PM code. Confirm the new PM code.
- * Enter "0" for the PM code to rerate the engine to the new rating.
- * This change is protected by factory-specified passwords in order to prevent unauthorized changes.
5. Verify whether the diagnostic code of 253-02 is active. (Check for customer or system parameters.) If active, reprogram the customer or system parameters listed on the service tool.
6. Write a Service Information And Management System (SIMS) history entry to record this uprate.
Parts Service Information Plate And 4W-5140 Engine Information Plate
1. Obtain from the parts system 4W-5140 Engine Information Plate with the following information:
- * Arrangement Number (AR NO).
- * Performance Specification (PERF SPEC).
- * Maximum Altitude (MAX ALT) 2250.
- * POWER.
- * BARE ENG. HIGH IDLE rpm.
- * FULL LOAD rpm.
- * FUEL TIMING.
- * Performance Specification (PERF SPEC).
To obtain this information, refer to the "OT" specification listed earlier in the Parts Description List.
Use the original plate as a reference in order to transfer the remaining block information to the new plate.
2. DO NOT remove original 9L-6531 Engine Information Plate.
3. Clean the face of original 9L-6531 Engine Information Plate.
4. Remove the protective backing from 4W-5140 Engine Information Plate.
Break off the lower section of the plate at the scribed mark.
5. Use 8T-9021 Adhesive to provide a permanent bond between the two plates.
NOTE: Carefully follow the instructions on the adhesive package. The adhesive and catalyst are applied in sequence from two separate containers. They will NOT bond permanently if applied premixed.
6. Position the new plate over the original plate so that the AR NO block of each plate is aligned. When positioned correctly, press firmly onto the original plate.
Certification Label
The original certification label is located on the engine valve cover.
1. Contact your Service Engineering Analyst at the factory to obtain a new certification label.
2. Clean the surface of the original certification label.
3. Remove the protective backing from the new label. Install the new label onto the original certification label.
