Using The 8T5230 Air Regulated Wrench Group{0602, 0765} Caterpillar

Using The 8T5230 Air Regulated Wrench Group{0602, 0765}

Usage:

Introduction

The 8T5230 Air Regulated Wrench Group allows control output torque in a range of 34 to 300 N·m (25 to 220 lb ft). The output torque of the wrench can be set by adjusting the air supply at the regulator. The regulator air gauge is calibrated in kPa and psi. The wrench has a 1/2 in. drive and is reversible.

An impact wrench can be used to initially install all fasteners. Final torque must be applied with the air regulated wrench group.

NOTICE

The 8T5230 Air Regulated Wrench Group is a precision tool. Supply air must be clean and dry with the proper lubrication. When operating in freezing temperatures, the wrench can be used with an alcohol evaporator.

Components of The Air Regulated Wrench Group

1. 8T5191 Bar. 2. 8T5192 Bar. 3. 8T5193 Regulator. 4. 8T5194 Block (Spacer). 5. 8T5224 Gauge. 6. 8T5225 Hose. 7. 8T5226 Nipple (two). 8. 8T5227 Coupler (two). 9. 8T5228 Block (base). 10. 6V4036 Case. 11. 6V6105 Block (lid). 12. 0T0065 Bolt-64 mm (2 1/2 in) long. 13. 1A5964 Bolt-89 mm (3 1/4 in) long. 14. 5M2894 Washer (two)

Adjusting The Wrench Torque Setting

Connect the inlet port of the air regulator and gauge assembly to a compressed air supply. Connect the hose and coupler assembly to the outlet port. Connect the other end of the hose and coupler assembly to the wrench.

Torque Settings Below 300 N·m (220 lb ft)

Use a 6V7915 Torque Wrench to initially tighten a fastener to the required torque. Mark the position of the fastener. Install the 1/2 in. square drive socket on the air wrench. Slowly raise the air pressure with the air regulator until the socket begins to rotate.

NOTICE

Make sure the reaction bar has been positioned so it opposes the output of the wrench before operating.

Move the lever above the trigger on the air wrench to reverse rotation and loosen the fastener. Reverse the rotation to clockwise and apply the wrench torque to the fastener. Check the position of the fastener relative to the previously marked position.

Adjust the air pressure at the regulator to line up the fastener with the previous mark. Record the setting for future reference.

The air wrench is now set to apply final torque to all other fasteners requiring the same torque. Changing the air pressure by 10 percent will change the torque output by approximately 13 percent and the rotation speed by 5 percent.

Torque Setting Above 300 N·m (220 lb ft)

Connect the air wrench to a torque multiplier. For torque settings from 300 N·m (220 lb ft) to 1630 N·m (1200 lb ft), use the 6V7820 Torque Multiplier. For torque settings from 1630 N·m (1200 lb ft) to 4350 N·m (3200 lb ft), use the 6V6080 Torque Multiplier.

NOTICE

Always place the selector in the neutral position on the 6V6080 Torque Multiplier and then tighten the selector pawl set screw. This will protect the ratchet mechanism.

Connect the torque multiplier to the air wrench with the 8T5194 Block, a 5M2894 Hard Washer and, depending on the torque multiplier used, a 0T0065 or a 1A5964 Bolt.

To set a specified torque on the air wrench, first connect a 6V7915 Torque Wrench to the required torque multiplier. Tighten the fastener to the required torque and mark the position.

Install the torque multiplier on the air wrench. Install the appropriate square drive socket on the torque multiplier. Gradually raise the air pressure with the air regulator until the socket begins to rotate.

NOTICE

Make sure the reaction bar has been positioned so it opposes the output of the wrench before operating.

Move the lever above the trigger on the air wrench to reverse rotation. Loosen the fastener. Change the socket rotation and apply the air wrench to the fastener. Check the position of the fastener relative to the previously marked position.

Adjust the air pressure at the air regulator to line the up fastener with the previous mark. Record the setting for future reference.

The wrench is now set to apply torque to all other fasteners requiring the same torque.

Reworking The Reaction Bar

In applications where the existing reaction bar will not work, several changes can be made. The 8T5191 Bar will provide application flexibility. To add length to the 330 mm (13 in) bar, place a pipe or tube on the end of the bar.

------ WARNING! ------

To avoid burns, do not touch reaction bar after it has been heated.

-------WARNING!-------
* If the reaction bar must be bent to fit a specific application, heat the bar to a dull cherry red.* Bend the bar with a clamp and a pipe extension to the required angle. Do Not bend the bar by hammering on it.* The heated bar must be air cooled after bending. Do Not quench the bar in oil or water

To install the auxiliary reaction bar on the air wrench, remove the left hand threaded retaining nut. Replace the 8T5192 Bar with the 8T5191 Bar. Lock the bar into position with the retaining nut.

Tool Repair and Service

1U5748 Output Spindle and 8T5321 Screen and Seal Kit are available service parts for the wrench.

The 1U5748 is a one piece replacement part for the 1/2 in. square drive output spindle.

The 8T5321 provides replacement components for the flip reverse trigger assembly. The kit contains o-ring seals, valve seat washer, retaining ring and a air input screen.
