Field Installation of the Four Lever Ford Pattern Backhoe Control Levers

Introduction

This special instruction outlines the basic procedures in order to install the 217-8368 Hydraulic Hand Control Conversion Gp (Four Lever Ford Pattern). The kit allows the skills of the operator to be matched with the machine controls.

The installation of the new controls requires the use of the following supplementary information. The Supplementary Product Support Literature, SMBU7679 will be included with the 217-8368 Hydraulic Hand Control Conversion Gp . The supplement details the correct operation of the Four Lever Ford Pattern controls. The supplement details the operating instructions in the following languages: English, Spanish and French. This supplement should be installed into the current Operation and Maintenance Manual when the kit is installed on the machine. Refer to Table 1 for the correct placement of the supplement.

Note: The supplement should be attached to the top portion on the corresponding page in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. All existing contents of the Operation and Maintenance Manual should be legible after inserting the supplement.

Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7398, "General Hazard Information" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7398, "Crushing Prevention and Cutting Prevention" before you perform any of the following procedures. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SMBU7679 in order to understand the function of the controls. This is supplementary information to the current Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Machine Preparation

  1. Park the machine. Apply the parking brake.

  1. Engage the Boom Lock.

  1. Turn the engine start switch key to OFF position.

Disassembly Procedure

  1. Remove the existing control knobs from the backhoe control levers.

  1. Remove the rear console.

  1. Remove the rear floorplate.

  1. Remove the existing backhoe controls and remove the existing linkage.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the 217-8368 Hydraulic Hand Control Conversion Gp .

    Note: The 217-8368 Hydraulic Hand Control Conversion Gp is a preassembled group from the factory.

  1. As the valve remains in the centered position, install clevis pin (21). Install lock pin (22). Check the linkage for correct adjustment. Refer to Step 3 for adjustment procedures to the control rods (19) .

    Note: The preset lengths of the control rods (19) may not be correct. The straight portion of each control lever should be perpendicular to the floorplates.

  1. Use the following steps in order to adjust the control rod length:

    1. Loosen nut (10) .

    1. Remove lock pin (22) and clevis pin (21) .

    1. Turn rod end (20) in order to adjust the linkage.

    1. Reinstall clevis pin (21) and lock pin (22) .

    1. Tighten nut (10) to a torque of 20 ± 5 N·m (14.8 ± 3.7 lb ft).

  1. Test the installed control group. Make any adjustments that are required.

  1. Install the rear console (5). Install the 218-2192 Film (4) onto the rear console.

    Note: The rear console should be positioned in order to allow full travel of the control levers in all directions.

  1. Install boots (2) and the 218-2193 Plate . Secure the plate with six 9R-9901 Fasteners .

  1. Thread nuts (10) onto control levers (11), (12), (13), and (14) .

  1. Install knobs (9) onto control levers (11), (12), (13), and (14) .

    Note: The knobs (9) should not touch each other during operation of the levers.
