Hydraulic Oil Contamination - Test

Usage:

IT14G 1WN

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The hydraulic oil in this brake system is SAE 10W. If the oil becomes contaminated, premature component failure could result. Contaminated oil can also contribute to overheating. Use the following procedure to sample the oil in the brake system.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine at high rpm.

  1. Actuate all cylinders through a minimum of ten full cycles.

  1. Actuate the service brakes in order to charge the brakes.

  1. Lower the bucket and/or attachments to the ground and stop the engine.

  1. Move all control levers and brake pedals through all positions in order to release any pressure in the hydraulic system.

  1. Start the engine and allow the engine to run at low idle.

Note: Do not operate the hydraulic controls.

    Sampling Valve

  1. Draw a 50 mL oil sample through the sampling valve. The level of contaminants must be lower than the values in the following table.

Table 1
