In any application, the machine's performance and the machine's ride are best when the machine is balanced. The correct balance maximizes the performance of the machine. Also, the correct balance minimizes compaction.

Use counterweights in order to balance the machine. Three types of counterweights are available for this machine:

Table 1
Counterweights
Group     Total Weight     Individual Weight
Front Counterweights (partial set) (1)
516 kg (1146 lb)

45 kg (100 lb)
Front Counterweights (full set) (2)
966 kg (2146 lb)

45 kg (100 lb)
Midbeam weights (3)
166 kg (365 lb)

83 kg (183 lb)
Rear Counterweights
537 kg (1177 lb)

37 kg (81 lb)
( 1 ) The front counterweights are available as a mounting bracket and ten weights.
( 2 ) The front counterweights are available as a mounting bracket and 20 weights.
( 3 ) The weights are an option that is installed at the factory.

Each type of counterweight is segmented. This permits installation and removal by hand. Hoisting equipment is not necessary.

Track-type machines pull higher loads than wheel type machines of the same weight. Therefore, less counterweight is needed on a track-type machine. The minimum amount of counterweight depends on the following factors:

  • The machine should be stable while you road a machine that is equipped with a three-point hitch.

  • The distribution of weight under the belts should be even. This ensures that the maximum amount of horsepower is transferred to the drawbar.

Installation of Counterweight

Front Counterweights

The front counterweights are available in either a partial set or a full set. The partial set includes a mounting bracket and ten individual weights. The full set includes a mounting bracket and 20 individual weights. Each counterweight weighs 45 kg (100 lb). The mounting bracket weighs 66 kg (146 lb). The front counterweights are mounted on the mounting bracket that is located on the front of the machine.

Use the following procedure in order to install the front counterweights:

  1. If the mounting bracket is not already installed on the machine, install the bracket with the eight bolts and washers that are provided.

The 363 380.0 Plates are installed in this position for more than ten counterweights.

The 363 380.0 Plates are installed in this position for ten counterweights or for less than ten counterweights.

  1. Mount the counterweights onto the bracket. Any number of counterweights up to 20 can be installed. Secure the counterweights by installing the threaded rod through the retaining plate and into the counterweights. Tighten the nut to a torque of 115 ± 20 N·m (85 ± 15 lb ft).

  1. Individual off-center counterweights may be installed by using the hardware that is shown in the illustration. Install the counterweights on the mounting bracket. Secure the individual counterweights by using the following items: angle (4), bolt (5), plate (3), nut (1) and washer (2) .

Rear Counterweights

Note: Machines that are equipped with a three-point hitch cannot be equipped with rear counterweights.

Rear counterweights can be installed on the drawbar support. Each counterweight weighs 37 kg (81 lb). Two support blocks are installed on machines that are equipped with a PTO. The 28 kg (62 lb) support blocks are used in order to provide clearance for the PTO.

Use the following procedure in order to install the rear counterweights:

  1. Install the support blocks (1) on the drawbar support (2) .

  1. Six counterweights (3) can be installed on the lower portion of the drawbar support (2). Secure the counterweights with the following hardware (5) : bolts, nuts and washers.

Midbeam Weights

Two optional weights can be installed at the factory. The weights are attached to the midbeam of the machine. Each weight weighs 83 kg (183 lb). Consult any CLAAS dealer for more information.
