Steering System Oil - Change

Usage:

793B 1HL
Operate the engine in order to warm the steering system oil. Park the machine on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine.

  1. Push the button on the breaker relief valve. The breaker relief valve is located on top of the steering tank.

  1. Slowly, remove the filler cap on the steering tank in order to relieve the pressure. Install the filler cap after the tank has been drained. This will prevent dirt from entering the system.

  1. Remove the tank drain plug.

    NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Open the drain valve.

  1. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container. Close the drain valve and install the drain valve plug.

Wash the Cap and the Filler Screen

  1. Remove the tank filler cap.

  1. Remove the retaining ring on the screen.

  1. Remove the filler screen. Wash the cap and the screen in clean, nonflammable solvent. Allow the cap and the screen to dry.

  1. Inspect the cap seal. Use a new seal if the used seal is damaged.

  1. Install the screen, the retaining ring and the cap.

Filling the Steering Hydraulic System

  1. Fill the steering hydraulic tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" .

  1. Use the engine shutdown control to prevent the engine from starting. Crank the engine for approximately 15 seconds. The oil level will decrease as oil fills the steering system.

  1. Add oil to the steering tank in order to raise the oil level to the safe starting range.

  1. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 until the oil stabilizes at the FULL mark in upper sight gauge (1) .

  1. Lower the guard on the engine shutdown control. Start the machine. Operate the machine in order to warm the oil. Stop the machine. Observe the oil level and inspect the machine for leaks.

  1. Install the filler cap.

  1. When the engine is running, the oil level should be at the FULL mark in lower sight gauge (2) . If the oil level in lower sight gauge (2) is low, the steering accumulators may need attention. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Accumulator - Check" for additional information.

Note: When the engine is operating, do not fill the steering tank. The tank could be too full when the engine is off.
