Removing Fuel Tank {1273}

Usage:

Challenger 65E (6GS) Challenger 75E (6HS) Challenger 85E (6JS) Challenger 95E (6KS) Agricultural Tractors

Certain service procedures require that the fuel/hydraulic tank be removed in order to gain access to some parts of the machine. The fuel/hydraulic tank assembly can be removed as a unit without draining.

NOTICE

Do not use a vacuum breaker on the fuel tank. Using a vacuum breaker on the fuel tank may damage the tank.

Use the following procedure to remove the fuel/hydraulic tank assembly:

1. Drain the hydraulic tank oil into a suitable container. You will need a container with 110 L (29 gal) capacity.

2. Disconnect the following items from the fuel/hydraulic tank assembly:

* Fuel lines
* Hydraulic lines
* Wiring harness for lights and fuel level sender
* Fuel tank vent line

3. Position lifting straps around the outside of the fuel tank as shown in Illustration 1.

NOTE: The lifting straps should be of equal length and be rated for a total weight of at least 1362 kg (3000 lb).

4. Remove the eight bolts (1) that hold the tank support assembly to the support assembly above the differential case.

5. Using a suitable lifting device, lift the tank off the machine. The weight of a fuel/hydraulic tank that is completely full of fuel is 1135 kg (2500 lb).

6. After lifting, immediately set the fuel tank down on the ground. This will help prevent the fuel tank from buckling as a result of the weight of the fuel.

NOTE: Do not use the lifting eye holes at the top and bottom of the tank assembly. These holes are for manufacturing purposes only and should not be used in order to lift a fuel tank that is full of fuel.
