Usage:
TIGHTENING SEQUENCE FOR SEAL INSTALLATION
(1) End play for the crankshaft ... .005 to .021 in.(0.13 to 0.53 mm)
Maximum permissible end play for the crankshaft ... .035 in.(0.89 mm)
(2) Torque for counterweight bolts ... 160 ± 10 lb. ft.(219 ± 14 N·m)
(3) Width of ring groove in thrower ... .255 to .256 in.(6.48 to 6.50 mm)
Minimum clearance between ring seal and groove ... .002 in.(0.05 mm)
Clearance between ends of ring seal (end gap) ... .024 to .056 in.(0.61 to 1.42 mm)
Ring seal groove "runout" (axial eccentricity) of ring groove face of thrower ... .006 in.(0.15 mm)
NOTE: Heat the thrower to a maximum of 450° F (232° C) before installation on crankshaft. Install seal ring with the word "out" away from crankshaft and the end gap UP.
(4) Torque for bolt ... 35 ± 5 lb. ft.(45 ± 7 N·m)
(5) Crankshaft deflection (D399 and D398 Engines) ... -.0005 to +.0010 in.(-0.013 to +0.025 mm)
Measure between faces of connecting rod throws of the crankshaft next to the center main bearings within .250 in. (6.35 mm) of counterweight.
(6) Depth to drive 3N3234 Ring into flywheel housing or front accessory drive housing.
Front ... .344 in.(8.71 mm)
Rear ... .177 in.(4.49 mm)
NOTE: Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on outside of ring before installation. Install ring with holes at bottom and chamfer toward inside of housing.
(7) Lip type seal for crankshaft. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on crankshaft and I.D. of wear sleeve before installation.
Install lip seal with bolts and spacers in the sequence shown. Do not tighten bolts more than 3 turns each time.
(8) Install crankshaft in cylinder block so direction of rotation marks on end of crankshaft show correct rotation at the front of engine.
NOTE: Some crankshafts have only arrows on the ends.
