Usage:

Remove Front Wheels, Bearings And Duo-Cone Seals

Start By:

a. remove front brake calipers

1. Drain the oil from the front wheel bearing compartment.

2. Remove bolts (2) and cover (1) from the wheel assembly.

3. The weight of wheel assembly (7) is 215 kg (473 lb). Fasten nylon strap (3) to wheel assembly (7) as shown.

4. Remove bolts (4), retainer (5) and the shims from the spindle.

5. Remove bearing cone (6) and wheel assembly (7) from the spindle.

6. Remove outer half of Duo-Cone seal (9).

7. The weight of the brake disc is 32 kg (71 lb). Remove bolts (8) and attach a hoist to brake disc (10). Remove brake disc (10) from the wheel assembly.

8. Remove bearing inner race (11) from the wheel assembly.

9. Remove bearing outer race (12) from the wheel assembly.

10. Remove bearing cone (13) from the spindle.

11. Remove inner half of Duo-Cone seal (9) from the retainer.

12. Remove retainer (14) from the spindle assembly.

13. Remove O-ring seal (15) from the retainer.

Install Front Wheels, Bearings And Duo-Cone Seals

1. Inspect and make a replacement if necessary of O-ring seal (1).

NOTICE

The Duo-Cone seals must be installed correctly. Refer to the topic "Assembly & Installation Of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals" in this module for the proper handling and installation procedures.

2. Put clean oil on O-ring seal (1), and install retainer (2) on the spindle assembly.

3. Install inner half of Duo-Cone seal (3) in retainer (2) with tool (A).

4. Install bearing cone (4) on the spindle assembly.

5. Lower the temperature of outer bearing race (5), and install it in the wheel assembly as shown. Make sure the bearing race is on its seat in the counterbore in the wheel assembly.

6. Lower the temperature of inner bearing race (6), and install it in the wheel assembly as shown. Make sure the bearing race is on its seat in the counterbore.

7. Put brake disc (7) in position on the wheel assembly as shown. Install the bolts, and tighten them to a torque of 750 ± 80 N·m (550 ± 60 lb ft).

8. Install outer Duo-Cone seal (8) in the wheel assembly with tool (A).

9. Fasten a hoist to wheel assembly (9), and install it on the spindle assembly.

10. Install bearing cone (10) on the spindle as shown.

NOTE: The tire and rim must be removed for the following bearing adjustment.

11. Make an adjustment to the front wheel bearings as follows:

a. Install retainer (11) without the shims. Hold the retainer with three bolts (12) that are evenly spaced as shown.

b. Turn the wheel slowly, and tighten bolts (12) evenly to a torque of 70 N·m (50 lb ft).

c. Use tool (B), and measure the distance to the end of the spindle through the two threaded holes in retainers (11). Find the average of these measurements.

d. Subtract the thickness of the retainer from the average distance found in Step c. The distance found plus 0.25 mm (.010 in) is the correct thickness of shims to be used between the retainer and the end of the spindle.

12. Apply 4C5593 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of bolts (12). Install the shim pack that was found in Step 11, retainer (11) and bolts (12). Turn the wheel assembly slowly, and tighten bolts (12) evenly to a torque of 250 ± 14 N·m (185 ± 10 lb ft).

13. Inspect and make a replacement of O-ring seal (13) if necessary. Install cover (14) on the wheel assembly.

14. Fill the front wheel assembly with oil to the correct level. See the Operation And Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.

End By:

a. install front brake calipers
