Problem

Too much grease may cause overheating of the main bearings in Twin Disc
rear, power take-off clutches on 3412 Industrial Engines used with
Morbark wood chippers.

Parts Needed

Dealers will need to order parts for this Program.
1 - 9Y4298 Plate 1 - 3B8489 Fitting
2 - 5D7449 Cup (if needed) 2 - 4F7499 Cone (if needed)

Action Required

With the clutch at maximum operating temperature, remove the breather
and bushing from the top of the bearing housing and check the
temperature with a thermister probe. The probe must be long enough to
reach the bottom of the hole.
If the temperature is 200 deg.F or less, remove the existing instruction
plate, transfer the data to the new plate and install the new
instruction plate. Also, remove the breather from the top of the
bearing housing and install a 3B8489 Fitting. Notify the operator that
the lubrication interval has been changed to 1 shot of 2S3230 High
Temperature Grease or an equivalent every 10 hours of operation.
If the temperature is more than 200 deg.F or if there have previous
reports of overheating of the bearings, see the attached procedure.

PRIORITY - Power Take-Off Clutch Needs To Be Checked For
Overheating
MODELS INVOLVED - 3412 Industrial Engines Used With Morbark
Chippers
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
Too much grease may cause overheating of the main bearings in rear,
power take-off clutches on the products listed below.
The temperature of the bearings in the power take-off clutch needs
checked when the clutch is at normal operating temperature. If the
temperature is too high, the clutch will need to be disassembled,
cleaned and the bearings repacked and adjusted. The repair will be done
at no cost to you.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately and schedule a time to
have this service performed. The repair time for this service is
approximately four to twenty hours depending on repair needed.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have
this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled
downtime.

Rework Procedure
1. Disassemble the clutch and remove all grease from the bearing
cavities and the bearings. Inspect the bearings and replace if
necessary.
2. Assemble the main shaft and bearings in the clutch housing without
grease.
3. Tighten the bearing adjusting nut while rotating the shaft until it
takes 60 in lb to rotate the shaft.
4. Loosen the adjusting nut four notches plus up to one additional
notch if necessary to align a notch with the lock plate bolt. Mark
the position of the adjusting nut. This will provide bearing end
play of .010-.012".
5. Disassemble the main shaft from the clutch housing and handpack the
bearings with approximately four ounces (1/4 of a grease cartridge)
of 2S3230 High Temperature Grease or an equivalent.
The grease cavity SHOULD NOT BE PUMPED FULL OF GREASE either before
or after the clutch is installed.
6. Assemble the clutch and tighten the adjusting nut to the position
found in Step 4.
7. Remove the existing instruction plate, transfer the data to the new
plate and install the new instruction plate.
8. Remove the breather from the top of the bearing housing and install
a 3B8489 Fitting.
NOTE: The lubrication interval has been changed to 1 shot of
2S3230 High Temperature Grease or an equivalent every 10
hours of operation.
