Introduction
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.
This Special Instruction describes the procedure for installing the new engine idle reduction system upgrade on certain 3512E engines.

Before servicing/performing maintenance on the machine, electrical power must be physically disconnected; battery plugs must be disconnected from the batteries, or the trailing cable must be unplugged, and warning tags and padlocks shall be applied by a certified electrician. Certified electricians shall perform or direct any electrical work, including any energized testing, repair work in controllers, motors, or other approved compartments, and shall insure that all compartments are properly closed and inspected prior to re-energization. All applicable lock out and tag out procedures must be followed. |

Note: Charge the batteries before starting the engine. Batteries with a low charge can damage the starter motor.

- Install ground strap (B) onto bolt (2).
- Install 4 bolts (2) with 4 hard washers (5), 4 spacers (6), and 4 isolation mounts (4) through ECM (1).
- On the backside of ECM (1) install 4 isolation mounts (4) and 4 hard washers (3) to bolts (2).
- Install ECM (1) onto bracket (A).

- Install the 560-1407 Sensor and Mounting Gp on the ground cable for each of the battery packs.
- Ensure that the battery is properly clipped to avoid rubbing on the sensors.
- To protect the sensors and cables, securely fasten the batteries to prevent movement in any direction.

- Install clips (8) and (9) around grommet (10) and hose assembly (6).
- Install bolt (15) with hard washer (13) through the clips, spacer (14), the cover assembly, and attach to the oil pan.
- Tighten bolt (15) to

- Connect to Cat ® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool.
Note: Cat ET 2019A or newer is recommended.
- Take the Product Status Report (PSR) for all Caterpillar ® ECMs.
- Install the 573-4642 Software available in SIS web for the EIRS ECM.
Note: The new software is available in the form of a flashfile through the Caterpillar Service Information System (SIS). A newer part number may be available. SIS Web only displays the latest available flashfile.
- Complete the EIRS commissioning audit checklist found in the publication listed below.
